The story is one of the most important aspects of an FF game to me. I tend to judge a game based on how well I remember its story and whether or not that is something I would want to relive. It's like a good book that you want to come back to again later. That being said, I don't mind a game that is a little linear if it gives me a great story. While I would prefer to have sidequests sprinkled throughout the game, I was okay with waiting a little later in the game to accomplish these if I was enjoying the story. Don't get me wrong, I miss my airships and exploring a diverse world map and looking for secret locations, but the story is just as important to me. While FFXIII may not necessarily be a "fan favorite," I had fun playing that game because story was interesting enough that I wanted to keep coming back for more, even if people don't like how linear it was. LR:FF on the other hand, tried making the game as non-linear as possible and gave the player the option of going anywhere they wanted at the beginning of the game, and it was this freedom that sacrificed a good story and did not even make the characters feel like the same ones through the other FFXIII games. The same can be said about FFXII in my opinion. I completed every sidequest and hunt (including Yiazmat) in the game but could not tell you one thing about the story! I only remember bits and pieces and I sank 80+ hours into that damn game! Anway, I think the best way to accomplish the best of both worlds is like what they have done with SNES and PS versions of FF (even Bravely Default). These games made you feel as though the game was open, but really it steered you exactly where it wanted to. You could get into the Tiny Bronco or Balamb Garden, but you couldn't fly over mountains or the ocean until later in the game. This limits where you can go but still gives you the freedom to explore, and you cannot explore any further until you progress the story. I think that this is the best way Square Enix can attract the casual gamer but still cater to their loyal fanbase. That being said, I will play any FF game, not matter how linear it is as long as they nail the story!

Have you played FF Tactics? One of the Best FF Games and one of my personal favorites if you couldn't tell from my zealotry. Its linear in that it tells you where to go and it has set paths but it also has plenty of side quests including one where you get Cloud! It also has one of the best stories in the FF series if you haven't played it i definitely recommend it and if you want more side quests and voice acting play The Lions War for PSP or ios.

I totally agree, 13 was a great game and the story was interesting and deep, where as lightning returns was lacking a lot of content. It felt like they just did a few old charicter and throw backs to thier other games but you can tell the actual srory in 5 mins. Try telling the full story of 7, 8, 9 or 10 in under 30 mins, i dare you, lol. Tactics WotL was an epic game and i thoroughly recommend it also, linea path yes but a lot of freedom too and you dont even notice the linea story as your always levelling jobs unlocking stuff, so much fun.

I never completed thirteen infact i had just got out of grand pulse by the time my ps3 died, but I didn't really care for the story that much as i hated Hope, Snow, Vanille, which a lot of the story surrounds. I did however really enjoy the battle system and the idea of the paradigm shift it sucks that they took that out of 13-3 and im still not sure why they would make two mainline sequels to a game with a mediocre story.

I played FFT:WoL but don't remember a whole lot of the story. I found myself learning all the damn jobs and playing through so many sidequests that by the time I would get back to the story I sort of lost track of what was going on, although I consider it one of the best FF games I've played. I think my problem with FFXII stems from this same issue where I spent majority of my time doing other shit in the game and spent so much time away from the story it was hard to get back into it again. As far as FFXIII goes, I think the story really picked up toward the end of the game, especially after reaching Gran Puls and Oerba. The story really starts to tie together during the back half of the game.

FF 12 has a weak story in that any of the characters could be the main one yet none of them are although it points to vann he and penelo have very little to do with whats going on. Ashe has the most to do with whats happening so she could be the main person. So really it doesn't matter if you forgot the story because there almost isnt one. I plan to play 13 again with it coming out on steam and I will have to see if it gets better at the end but I don't think a game should take 20 hours for the story to finally make sense or be good.
