THE LIST
This is a document to help clear up confusion as to the order of the Final Fantasy games as it pertains to Ultima Final Fantasy.
It should be clear that we do not intend to play any mobile-only games whatsoever. Unless things change in the next couple years, the mobile market is one for cash-grabbing and low quality pay-as-you-play games. By simply putting the name “Final Fantasy” on your mobile app does not make it a Final Fantasy game worth playing, in our eyes. Besides, Square-Enix constantly puts out mobile games, and there’s no way in hell that when we are through with the games on this document that we will be pushing to play, what will be, the thousands of mobile-only games left in the series.
There are also a couple games that have been released outside of Japan that were only titled “Final Fantasy” for the export of the game. “Final Fantasy Legends” and “Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Dungeon” are the prime examples. Although we may make an exception, we feel no current drive to play the rest of the Chocobo Dungeon Series, or the Saga series for which those games are a part of. Sorry.
We have however included several games that were originally pitched or planned to be Final Fantasy games, but were eventually re-titled. Most notably, “Chrono Trigger” and “Xenogears”.
Other exceptions such as “Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring” and “Kingdom Hearts” are included because of multiple Final Fantasy characters making appearances in the games, and since we want the full experience, sequels to games christened “Final Fantasy” that do not bear the name are also included.
A note on the order: We have designed the order to go from the inside out. In other words, if we look at the roman numeral-ed games as the main series of games, then we must do those first.
Sequels to the main games follow the mains, and then spin offs after that. The more we play, the further from the “mains” we will go, until all games have their campaigns beaten. Further down the list, if a game is released that we would have played earlier had it come out earlier (Final Fantasy XV), we will interrupt the current order and play through that game. For example, if another sequel to FFVII comes out and we’re on the Ivalice games, we’ll go back and play the FFVII sequel first before returning to Ivalice. Non-mains will be played in chronological order, based on the world the game takes place in.
Also, there are many games that are not available here in the U.S.: any non-translated and non-emulatable games will not be played (basically anything after the 16 bit era can’t be played).
Other media (books/movies) are not included on this list, and as always everything is subject to change:

So, where do we go after that? Who knows! We may just become an RPG podcast (we do have “Ultima” in the title), but we’ll see about that when we get there. And believe us, that’s a long, long way away.
Did I miss a game? Let me know!
