I wouldn't waste my time on it lol. I started translating it, but gave up after reading summaries. It feels like Nojima wrote it out of bitterness of them bringing Tidus back
Heres my shitty rough translation of Chapter 1
暗闇の中にティーダはいた。膝を抱えて、とろとろとしていると、突然頭の芯に映像が結ばれた。目玉が捕らえたものか、もとより記憶の中にあった光景なのか判然としない。
Tidus was surrounded by darkness. He held his knees as he drifted off. Suddenly, an image appeared at the back of his mind. What caught his eye wasn’t clear. From the start, he was uncertain whether it was a scene from his memory.
広い背中に長い髪を垂らした男と、しなだれかかる細い女が見えだ。今はもういない、彼の両親だ。父親はある日姿を消し、母親は寂しさのあまり死んだ。自分が母親の慰めにはならないと知って深く傷ついた日の胸の痛みが蘇った。
A man with long hair hanging down his broad back, snuggling with a beautiful, slender woman. They were his parents, now already gone. One day his father disappeared, and his mother died of overwhelming loneliness. The pain he felt in his heart that day, knowing that he couldn't console his mother, was revived.
次の瞬間、ティーダは大観衆の中にいた。嬌声に得意気な笑顔で応える。心の傷はどうやって癒やしたのだろう。不思議に思ったが居心地のよさに身を委ねていろうちに、疑問はどこかに溶けてしまった。

Then he realised, he was in love. On the day that they confirmed their feelings for eachother, they realised it was a love that could never be. He resisted, because he didn't want to accept their fate, it was unbearable.
雲海が見えた。スピラを去った日の記憶だ。
I saw a sea of clouds. It’s a memory of the day I left Spira.
自分の背中があった。飛空艇の甲板を、空元気を振りまいて走り、飛んだ。
He was on his back. The deck of the airship, I summed up the courage, ran, and leapt.
胸が千切れそうに痛んだ。
My heart ached like it had been torn out.

その響きが、頭を揺さぶった。

視界が明瞭になった。滲んでいた闇と自分の境界が明瞭になった。闇をまとった混沌から切り離された実感があった。

振り返ると、ビサイド島があった。初めて見た時と変わらない、中央が小山のよぅに盛り上がった、緑の三角。縁取りの砂浜が波に洗われている。

無人の海岸に指笛を吹いた。

待ちかねたように中からユウナが飛び出した。

ハッチを滑り台のように使って、そのまま勢いよく海面に飛び降制る。初めて見る、快活な服装が意外だった。知っているユウナとは違う、と、ほんの一瞬、思った。だが、駆けてくる彼女の眼中には自分しかいないと知った喜びが、小さな違和感を消し去った。この瞬間、彼女を独占しているという喜びは、ティーダの心の、満たされたことのない部分にまで届い踵。
She used the hatch like a slide, and quickly leapt to the surface of the water. Her cheerful attire was a surprise. It was the first time he saw it. For just a moment, he thought that she was different from the Yuna he knew. But, as she ran, the joy in her eyes that he knew erased that niggling feeling. That moment, the joy overtook Tidus' heart, ........

ためらったあと、ユウナは覚悟を決めたように、訊いた。
After hesitating, Yuna prepared herself, and asked.
「たぶん」
"I think so."
答えは、彼女に出して欲しかった。ゆっくりと身体を離したユウナが、正解を探している。いや、間違いを探しているのだろうか。
I wanted to give her an answer. Yuna slowly separated from my body, and looked for the right answer. Well, she was probably looking for something wrong.
「どうスか?」
"Do I pass?"
「うん----おかえり」
"Uh huh... You're back."
ホッとした。
I was relieved.
「ただいま」
"I am back."
言いながら、ユウナを抱き寄せる。いや、しがみついた。ユウナに否定されたら、自分はどうなっていたのだろうという思いが、一瞬よぎったのだ。

ティーダはユウナの手を取り、ワッカたちの方へ走り出した。たった今から、新しい、しかも、楽しい部分だけを引き継いだ人生が始まるのだ。そう思うと心が弾んゼ。
Tidus took Yuna's hand and started running toward Wakka. From right now, I can enjoy only the fun things for my whole life. Thinking that excites me!
「ていうかさ、なんか、変わったよな」
"You know, you've changed."
「そりゃあいろいろありましたから」
"Well, you've missed a few things."
勿体ぶった答えだ。だが、彼女の物語がどんな内容であっても、今は笑顔で手をつなぎ、走ることができるような結末なのだ。
The answer is pretentious. But, whatever the contents of her story, now I feel I can smile, take her hand and run with her to the end.
「聞きたい!」
"I wanna hear everything!"

村人たちが待ちかまえていたのは、しばらく村を留守にしていたユウナだった。もちろん、テーダもごく一部の顔見知りからは歓迎された。ダット、レッティ、ボッツ、ジャッシュ、キッパ----懐かしのビサイド・オーラカの面々だ。
The people of the village had been waiting for Yuna, who had been away from the village for a while. Of course, Tidus was only greeted by the few people he was familiar to. Datto, Letty, Botta, Jassu, Keepa... All of the good old Besaid Aurochs.

挑むような声が背後から答えた。振り返るとまず豊かな胸が目に入った。ルールーだ。

「やっぱり、美人だよな」

ふん、とルールーは鼻で笑い、赤ん坊をワッカから奪い取った。

「島の子だ。どうせ----」
"You’re an islander. Anyway..."
「潮始めまでは待つって言ったじゃない」

「だってよぉ----」
"Oh boy..."
まあまあ、とティーダは笑いながら割って入った。

「とにかく、おめでとう。てかさあ、結局そういうこと? やっぱりくっついた? 俺が思ったとおり!」

「そうね。あまりにもありがちで、時々嫌になるわね」

「おいおい!」
"Hey hey!
「それで?」 ルールーはワッカを無視してティーダに訊いた。 「しばらくここにいるわけ?」
"So?"Lulu asked Tidus, ignoring Wakka. "Will you be here for a while?”

"…I'd like to, if I can."
少し不安になった。

ルールーは周囲を見まわした。人々が動き始めていた。

Wrapping the baby up in the blanket, covering his chin, Lulu joined the people heading to the village. Naturally, her child was her top priority. Even though he understood it, Tidus felt a tinge of loneliness.
「おーし、行こうぜ」
"Yo, let's go.”
ワッカが明るくティーダの肩を叩いた。
Wakka patted Tidus on the shoulder familiarly.
村への道中、オーラカたちが入り替わり立ち替わりでティーダに話しかけてきた。
On the way to the village, the Aurochs talked to Tidus about being a substitute.
おかげで、不在の問にチームに起こった出来事はずっと一緒だったように詳しくなった。グットやキッパの上達具合の、自慢めいた話でさえ我が事のように喜ばしく、新人たちがチームに参加するためにビサイド島に移り住んだ話は感動的でさえあった。きっかけは、ティーダが参加した、あのトーナメントだったらしい。
What happened to the team during their time together, was thanks to him. Gotto and Keepa had improved, which made him proud. New people had even moved to Besaid Island to join the team, because they were so impressed. It seemed it was the tournament that Tidus participated in that started it.
半時間ほどで村に着いた。
They arrived at the village in around half an hour.
「今日は夕方から宴会になるはず。主催は長老たちね。手伝って、顔を売っておきなさい。いい印象をね。もし休みたかったら、あの天幕を使って」
"We should have a party this evening. The elders will organise it. You'll help, of course. Win them over. Make a good impression. If you want to take a rest, you can use that tent."
ルールーは村の中で一番大きな天幕を指さした。討伐隊の宿舎だ。
Lulu pointed to the largest tent in the village. It was the lodgings that seemed ....corps/group
「討伐隊の連中はどうしてる?」
"Why are you guys
「好きに生きてるわ。そういう時代だもの。それから、ユウナの部屋は寺院の----前と同じところ」

「ひゅー!」
"Huh!?"
宴会用らしい薪を運びながらワッカが冷やかした。ティーダは頬がかっと赤くなるのを感じた。

「何それ」 ルールーは冷たく吐き捨てた。 「行くなってことよ。誤解を招くような行動も慎んで。少なくとも、ユウナがあんたを長老たちに紹介するまではダメね。それに、紹介に関係なく、みんながどう思うかは、あんたの言動次第。寺院が機能しなくなってからユウナはご隠居たちの、心の拠り所なんだから。これ、忘れないで。ユウナ自身でさえ、自由に生きられないの」
"Wait." Lulu spat out coldly. "No there. Refrain from doing anything wrong. At least until Yuna introduces you to their elders. Also, regardless of the introduction, what everyone thinks of you depends on your conduct. After Yuna retired, the temple lost its function, since she was at its heart. Don't forget that. Even Yuna herself can't live freely."

ユウナは寺院の前、声が届くところにいるというのに話すことができない。誰もがユウナと話したがり、しかも、解放しようとしない。

もちろん彼女は何か理由をつけて席を外すこともできる。だが、そんな人情のないことはしな い。それがユウナだ。人の良さは長所だが、時に----今は疎ましい。

パインは品定めをするようにティーダを見た。

本気の抗議だったが、リュックは気づかなかったらしい。ひとしきり笑い合ったあと、この二年の出来事を語り始めた。

道中、入り江に着いたら船の到着までブリッツ・ボールをしようという話でオーラカは盛り上がった。しかも、入り江まで競走だ、とキッパが言いだす。挑発的な顔だった。ティーダは快諾したものの、下り坂を勢いよく駆け下りながら考えるのは、相変わらずユウナのことだった。

本当に済まなそうな顔をしていた。

What happened to the team during their time together, was thanks to him. Gotto and Keepa had improved, which made him proud. New people had even moved to Besaid Island to join the team, because they were so impressed. It seemed it was the tournament that Tidus participated in that started it.
半時間ほどで村に着いた。
They arrived at the village in around half an hour.
「今日は夕方から宴会になるはず。主催は長老たちね。手伝って、顔を売っておきなさい。いい印象をね。もし休みたかったら、あの天幕を使って」
"We should have a party this evening. The elders will organise it. You'll help, of course. Win them over. Make a good impression. If you want to take a rest, you can use that tent."
ルールーは村の中で一番大きな天幕を指さした。討伐隊の宿舎だ。
Lulu pointed to the largest tent in the village. It was the lodgings that seemed ....corps/group
「討伐隊の連中はどうしてる?」
"Why are you guys
「好きに生きてるわ。そういう時代だもの。それから、ユウナの部屋は寺院の----前と同じところ」
"Life is great. It's that kind of era. Then, there's Yuna's room in the temple... The same place as before."
「ひゅー!」
"Huh!?"
宴会用らしい薪を運びながらワッカが冷やかした。ティーダは頬がかっと赤くなるのを感じた。
Wakka teased him as he carried the firewood for the party. Tidus felt his cheeks turning red.
「何それ」 ルールーは冷たく吐き捨てた。 「行くなってことよ。誤解を招くような行動も慎んで。少なくとも、ユウナがあんたを長老たちに紹介するまではダメね。それに、紹介に関係なく、みんながどう思うかは、あんたの言動次第。寺院が機能しなくなってからユウナはご隠居たちの、心の拠り所なんだから。これ、忘れないで。ユウナ自身でさえ、自由に生きられないの」
"Wait." Lulu spat out coldly. "No there. Refrain from doing anything wrong. At least until Yuna introduces you to their elders. Also, regardless of the introduction, what everyone thinks of you depends on your conduct. After Yuna retired, the temple lost its function, since she was at its heart. Don't forget that. Even Yuna herself can't live freely."
ルールーは肩をすくめた。腕の中で赤ん坊がじたばたと動く。

「----ユウナは、幸せじゃないのか?」
"...Yuna isn't happy?"
「さあ。本人に聞きなさいよ」
"Come on. Listen to this guy.”
「そういう話、ユウナは誤魔化すからなあ」

ティーダが言うと、ルールーは感心したような顔をした。
As Tidus said it, Lulu had an expression like she was impressed.
「わたしの見たところ、半々って感じね。こういう状況にした責任は感じる、でも、村にいると息が詰まる。だからリュックたちとあちこち飛び回っていた」
“As far as I see it, 50/50. She felt responsible for what happened, but she was suffocating in this village. So she flew around all over with Rikku."
「何してたんだ?」
"She did what?"
「それこそ、本人から聞いて。とにかくね、ユウナを困らせるようなことはしないで」
"Sure, ask her for yourself. Anyway, don’t embarrass Yuna."

"Roger."
ルールーが自分の天幕に去ってから、ティーダはまたビサイド・オーラカと過ごした。
After leaving Lulu's tent, Tidus spent more time with the Besaid Aurochs.
ユウナは寺院の前、声が届くところにいるというのに話すことができない。誰もがユウナと話したがり、しかも、解放しようとしない。
Yuna was in front of the temple, but he couldn't reach her to talk to her. Everybody wanted to talk to Yuna, so he didn’t want to disturb her.
もちろん彼女は何か理由をつけて席を外すこともできる。だが、そんな人情のないことはしな い。それがユウナだ。人の良さは長所だが、時に----今は疎ましい。
Of course, she can also find a reason to excuse herself. But I don’t have as much empathy as her. That’s Yuna. Her kindness is a strength, but sometimes… I’m being unsympathetic.
ユウナだっておまえと話したいはずだ、とワッカが請け負い、交渉に向かったが、老人たちは召喚士を手放すまいと意地になっていた。

「なんかよう、おまえ、警戒されてるぞ」

非難がましい声に振り返るとりュックがいた。
大胆に露出した肌が小麦色に焼けて、記憶の中よりも精悍だった。

リュックは騒がしい挨拶を終えると、振り返って、背後の誰かを呼んだ。現れたのは髪を両サイドで撫でつけた、凛々しい表情の女だ。層を出した黒い上下で全身を覆ったその姿は、リュックとの対比もあって、大人に見えた。
As Rikku finished her noisy greeting, she looked back, and called to someone behind her. She was a woman with a dignified expression, with slicked back hair on both sides. Her whole body was covered from top to bottom in black. Compared to Rikku, she seemed grown up.
「パインっていうんだ。ここんところ、ユウナんと一緒に活動していた仲間だよ」
“This is Paine. Here, Yuna and I joined her group.”
「あんたのことはユウナから聞いている。いやってほどね」
“I heard about you from Yuna. …………..
パインは品定めをするようにティーダを見た。
Paine watched Tidus in judgement.
「二年ぶりくらいだよね。それなのに----」
“It’s been about two years. And yet…”
リュックは鼻先が触れんばかりに顔を寄せてティーダを覗き込んだ。
Rikku stared at Tidus, and put her face close to touching the tip of his nose.
二年----具体的な時間を聞いて、腹の底が重くなった。ここまでの会話の感触から、そこそこの月日は覚悟していた。だが、二年とは。
Two years… It’s been that long? The pit of my stomach became heavy. From how the conversation was going, they were fairly prepared for this day.
「全然変わってないね」
“You haven’t changed at all.”
その言葉に笑うべきか嘆くべきか。判断がつかずにティーダは、結局笑った。
I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry at those words. Without making a decision, Tidus just laughed.
「そっちだって----」 変わっていないと言おうとしてリュックを見ると、彼女はいきなり身体をくわらせて両腕で胸を強調した。その向こうに、ユウナが見えた。
“Even then…” As he looked at Rikku, trying to tell him that he hadn’t changed, she suddenly emphasised her chest with both arms on her hips. On the other side, Yuna was visible.
「----変わらないな」
“…I haven’t changed.”
特に考えも無しに言った。ユウナが気に。服装の好みと同じく、中身も変わったのだろうか。
I said without much thought. Like Yuna. Other than her taste in clothes, what’s changed?
「はい、こっち見て。今話しているのはわたし」 リュックは口を尖らせて言った。 「なんか、君、違っちゃったね」
“Yes, look here. My turn to speak.” Rikku said while pouting her lips. “Somehow, you seem different.”
「変わってないって言ったばかりだろ?」
“Didn’t you just say I haven’t changed?”
「それは見た目の話。中身は変わった気がするな。前は、もっときあ、馬鹿っぽくて、その代わりに人なつこかったよね?」
“I’m talking about appearance. I think that has changed. You seem like even more of an idiot than before, but ……………
「ひっでえ」
“I can be.”
本気の抗議だったが、リュックは気づかなかったらしい。ひとしきり笑い合ったあと、この二年の出来事を語り始めた。
It was a serious objection, but Rikku didn’t seem to have noticed. After laughing for a while, she started telling me what happened the last two years.
"真実運動" "スフィアハンター" そして "カモメ団" ----最初は質問を挟みながら聞いていたが、知らない名前や事件を愉快そうに語るリュックが、次第に憎らしくなった。
“The Truth Movement”, “Sphere Hunters”, and “The Gullwings”… I first heard it while while putting questions, but Rikku talked about funny incidents and names I didn’t know, so he gradually became irritated.
「楽しそうでなによりッスね」
“It was so much fun!”
「あれ? ちょっとトゲがある?」
“What? Isn’t that a little thorny?”
「俺には話せることが何もないんだ。それがちょっと悔しいっていうか----二年も会ってなかったってのに、話すことないんだぞ? 俺、何してたんだ?」
“I don’t know anything you’re saying. I mean, it’s kinda frustrating… Even though I haven’t seen her in two years, why haven’t we spoken? What did I do?”
「----休憩」
“…Give me a break.”
パインはぽつりと言ってから口の端だけで笑った。冗談のつもりらしい。そう、ここで話しても何かがわかるわけではないだろう。
Paine just sighed and laughed at the edge of her mouth. It wasn’t meant to be a joke. So, I don’t know what she’s talking about.
「でも、楽しそうで良かった。俺がいなくなったせいでみんながずっと泣いて暮らしたんじゃ責任感じるって」
“But it was nice to see her happy. I felt responsible for her crying all the time that you had dissappeared.”
軽いノリで言うと、リュックは眉を顰めた。
As she said it lightly, Rikku furrowed her eyebrows.
「泣くっていうか、わたしは腹が立ったな。なにコレ、どういうことって。君に何が起こっていたのか----どうしていなくならなくちゃダメだったのか、後から聞いてなんとか納得したけど」
“I mean cry, and was angry. ……what do you mean? What happened to you?... Why didn’t she hear from you
「ヘえ----」
“Hey…
「ユウナは----」 独り言のようにパインが口を挟む。 「カモメ団の活動を楽しんでいた。でも、全部が全部じゃない。無理していると思うこともあった。スフィアハントとかコンサートとか、あれはあれで本気だったと思うけど、結局目的は----あん詰だ。あんたに会うため。あんたを忘れるため。どっちか知らないけどな」
“Yuna…” Paine butted in, talking to herself. “I enjoyed the activities of the Gullwings. But not all of them, I thought that maybe we overdid it. Like Sphere Hunter or the concert, but I thought that she was serious about those, after all, that was the point… it was fulfilling. In order to find you. In order to forget you. I didn’t know which.”
「俺?」
“Me?”
「うん、だって、ユウナんが村を飛び出したきっかけは、君が写ったスフィアだもんね」
“Yeah, I mean, Yuna took the opportunity to get out of this village, because you appeared in a sphere.”
「はあ?」
“Huh?”
「シューインって男の子がいて、その恋人がレン。千年くらい前の召喚士で、同時に人気のある歌手だった。そのふたりを巡る事件があって、シューインが君にそっくりだったんだ。ユウナんも、たぶん、君本人だと思って----また会えると思って----でも、結局違ったんだ」
“Shuyin, the boy, and his sweatheart, Lenne. She was a sunnoner around 1000 years ago, and a popular singer at the same time. Something happened between the two of them, Shuyin looked just like you. Yuna even thought that the person might be you… she hoped to see you again… but he was different in the end.”
「違ったけど、すっかり首を突っこんでいたわたしたちは千年前の機械兵器と戦う羽目になった」
“Though he was different, we stuck our necks out, and had to fight against a machine weapon from 1000 years ago.”
「千年って----」
“1000 years…”
途方も無い話だと思ったが、スピラの常識はティーグの常識とはかなり違う。ティーダは言いかけて結局、黙った。
He thought it was an amazing story. Spisa’s common sense was very different from Tidus’ common sense. Tidus started to speak, but fell silent.
「そりゃ、わけわかんないって思ったけど、目の前で起こってることだから、受け入れるしかない。何々? どういうこと? なんて考えたら死んじゃうし」
“Well, that’s what I thought, but it all happened before our eyes, so we had to accept. What? What do you mean? I thought we were gonna die.”
リュックは自分の首を絞めて舌を出した。
Rikku strained her neck and stuck out her tongue.
「蘇った巨大機械兵器ヴェグナガン。デカくて厄介だったが、なんとか始末した結果----」
“The giant mechanical weapon, Vegnagun was revived. It was pretty difficult, but we managed to take care of it…”
パインは目を細めてティーダを見ている。
Paine looked at Tidus, narrowing her eyes.
「ん?」
“Eh?”
「ユウナの話によると、またスピラを救ったその褒美として、折り子があんたを返してくれるって言ったとか言わないとか」
“According to Yuna, as a reward for saving Spira, she was told the Faith would return you.”
「つまり、俺が戻って来られたのは祈り子のおかげか」
“You mean, the fact that I’m back is thanks to the Faith?”
「頑張ったユウナんでしょ!」
“Yuna did her best!”
リュックは大声で非難した。その声があたりに響いた。周囲の会話が途絶え、静寂が波のように広がる。視線が集まった。ユウナを囲んでいる老人たちの責めるような目線が痛い。
Rikku chastised him loudly. Her voice could be heard all around. Conversations around them stopped, the silence spread like waves. All eyes gathered on them. The condemning glares of the elders surrounding Yuna were painful.
ユウナと、目が合った。
My eyes met Yuna’s.
ごめんね----と、その口が動く。続いて、後でね----と動いた。
Sorry… he mouthed the word. Consequently, afterwards… it worked.
うれしかった。だが、放置されている不満を伝えるべきだと考え、肩をすくめた。するとユウナは、律儀に、あ、と、で、と繰り返した。老婆が眉を顰めてユウナとティーダを交互に見やった。ユウナが叱られる、と焦った。慌てて、何度もうなずいた。
I was happy. But I thought that I should convey my remaining frustration, and shrugged my shoulders. Then Yuna, oh so sincerely repeated it. An old woman looked back and forth at Tidus and Yuna, and furrowed her brow. As Yuna was scolded, I got impatient. Flustered, I nodded my head several times.
しかし、その 「あとで」 はなかなか訪れなかった。
But the “Later” couldn’t come soon enough.
散々話した接になって、ユウナは着替えるべきだと年寄りのひとりが言いだし、彼女を寺院の中に連れ去ってしまった。ティーダは、ルールーの助言に従って宴会の準備を手伝っていたが、村が総出で動いている中、すぐに仕事はなくなった。結局、曖昧な笑顔でリュックたちのところへ戻るしかなかった。
Joined by people speaking harshly, Yuna was told by one of the old people that she should change her clothes, and led her away into the temple. Eventually, I just went back to Rikku with an ambiguous smile.
しばらく三人で話した。キマリ=ロンブの近況や 「あれから」 の話を聞いた。新エボン党や青年同盟、アルベド=マキナ派の話だ。
I spoke for a while with the three of them. I was told what has happened “since then” and what Kimahri Ronso’s been up to. They told me about the Al Bhed Machina Faction, the Youth League and New Yevon,
ユウナが唄ったコンサートのことは聞けば聞くほど苛立った。
It was frustrating enough hearing them telling him about Yuna singing in a concert.
それはティーダが過ごした、死に向かって追い立てられるような深刻さとは違う、命がけではあるが興味半分の冒険の話に聞こえた。
Tidus passed on that, It was different from the serious urged toward death. They risked death, but it sounded like an exciting adventure.
「あれ? 不機嫌?」
“What? Grumpy?”
「別に」
“Not really.”
「一生懸命話したのに!」
“But you spoke so harshly!”
リュックがぷんぷんと怒りだし、飛空艇に帰ると言い出した。パインが、何日かのうちにまた戻るとユウナに伝えてくれと言ったが、ティーダは生返事で見送った。
Rikku was starting to get angry, and told them she was going back to the airship. Pain asked him to tell Yuna that they were going back in a few days, and Tidus half-heartedly waved her off.
忙しげに動き回る人々の中で感じる孤独は最悪だ。いたたまれなくなって天幕に逃げ込み、べッドに転がった。何度も姿勢を変えて雑念と戦っているうちに天幕越しの空が、薄暗くなった。宴会は日が落ちてからの予定だ。ほどなく始まるに違いない。ユウナが申し訳なさそうに迎えに来る様子を、ティーダは枕を抱きしめて夢想した。
The worst loneliness was felt by people busily moving around. He wasn’t able to stay, and escaped to a tent, and lay down. As the sky over the tent became darker as I tossed an turned, fighting idle thoughts. The party was scheduled after nightfall. It must be starting soon. Tidus dreamt while holding the pillow, that Yuna apologetically came to get him.
しかし、現れたのはワッカだった。
But it was Wakka who appeared.
「タ漁の船が戻るから魚運びを手伝うぞ。これはオーラカの義務だ。おまえも来い」
“When the fishing boat gets back, we‘ll help carry the fish. That’s my job. You’re coming too.”

道中、入り江に着いたら船の到着までブリッツ・ボールをしようという話でオーラカは盛り上がった。しかも、入り江まで競走だ、とキッパが言いだす。挑発的な顔だった。ティーダは快諾したものの、下り坂を勢いよく駆け下りながら考えるのは、相変わらずユウナのことだった。
On the way, Wakka brought up the topic of Blitzball until the boat arrived in the cove. Then he raced to the beach, and started talking to Keepa. It was a provocative expression. Tidus agreed, but thinking as he quickly ran down the hill, it was Yuna as usual.
今頃、俺を探しているかも。村にいた方が良かったのでは----
By now, she must be looking for me. I should be in the village…
「ティーダさん、遅いッスよ!」
“Tidus, slow down!”
誰かが叫んだ。
Someone shouted.
全力で走っていたはずだが、気づくと、後ろにはワッカしかいなかった。
I would have run at full speed, but I realised, it was just Wakka behind me.
「おーい、 もう夜だぁ! 転ぶぞ、無茶するな!」
“Hey, It’s night already! You’ll fall, don’t be silly!”
「ワッカさん」 ずっと先を行くメンバーが答える。 「棄権してください。怪我しますよ」
“Wakka,” Answered a members up ahead. “Please, stop. You’re injured.”
うるさいと応えるワッカの声は笑っていた。
He laughed loudly at Wakka’s voice.
「おまえら、止まれ!」
“You, stop!”
どう足掻いても追いつけないので、チームの足を止めようとしたらしい。ワッカの姑息な作戦 に便乗してティーダは速度を落とし、やがて足を止めた。
He struggled to keep up, because he seemed to try to stop the foot of the team. Wakka skowed Tidus down by improvising a strategy, and he eventually stopped.
「ワッカ、本当に引退したんだな」
“Wakka, I’m really retired.”
からかうと、汗だくのワッカは荒い息のままうなずき、歩き始めた。
I was teasing him. The sweaty Wakka nodded as he tried to catch his breath, and started walking.
「おまえと一緒に出たルカの大会----二年も前だ----あれで引退する計画だった。話したよな? 実際、引退したつもりで、あれからコーチとしてチームを見ていた。で、次の大会で派手に負けてな。ずっと負け続け続った頃はなんとも思わなかったけど、あの惨敗は悔しかった。俺だけじゃない。全員だ。それで、かなり本格的にトレーニングをしたんだ。練習漬けの毎日よ。村の連中も仕事の割り振りを加減してくれて、俺らをブリッツに専念させてくれてよ。おかげで、どんどん上達した。もう違う次元に来たって感じだな。でな、ダットやレッティたちを見ていたら俺もやっぱり選手に戻りたいって思うようになった。でもほら、ちょうどユウナがカモメ団とか言い出して、バタバタして、ルーのお腹はどんどんでかくなるし、それに村の世話役みたいな感じになっちまって----やる気は誰にも負けないし、ま時まだ若い。でも----」
“You joined us for the tournament in Luca… two years ago… It was my plan to retire after that. You spoke? Actually, I intended to retire, I watched the team as a coach since then. So we lost badly in the next tournament. We continued losing all the time, and I didn’t think about continuing, the crushing defeat was frustrating. It wasn’t just me. It was everyone. わかるだろ、とワッカは肩をすくめた。決断できない性格は変わっていないようだ。
Wakka shrugged his shoulders, he seemed to understand.
「で、毎日ルーに叱られてるわけよ」
“So Lu scolds me everyday.”
ワッカは照れて頭を掻いた。オーラカはずっと先に行ってしまい、気配も消えてしまった。
Wakka scratched his head in embarrassment.
失われ佳二年間を思いながら歩いていると、ワ ッカが遠慮がちに肩を抱いてきた。

ワッカはこういうスキンシップの取り方をしただろうか。記憶を探りながらその腕に促されるままに "滝の道" と呼ばれる、島の外周を巡る道を下った。崖の上から落さる滝がふりまく霧雨のような水で全身が濡れた。やがてワッカの手が頭に移動して、髪を掻き回した。さすがにおかしい。
「なん!」
“What!?”
ティーダは乱暴に手を払った。
Tidus swung his hands wildly.
「悪い。確認したかった」
本当に済まなそうな顔をしていた。
「おまえ、本物なんだよな? 異界のアレみたいに、幻じゃないんだよな?」
“You’re real? Kind of a Farplane, you’re not an illusion?”
「そのつもりだけど。もちろん、本物の方」
“I don’t think so. Of course I’m a real person.”
「だよなぁ!」
ワッカは取り繕うように豪快な声を出して笑った。
Wakka laughed out loud to cover it.
だが、ティーダは "異界のアレ" のことが気になっていた。
But Tidus became worried about “the Farplane”.
念じれば、死者が姿を現し、会話さえできるという場所----異界。初めて異界へ行った時のことを思い出す。促されるままに母親のことを考え、確かに母親の姿を見た。自分も、あの時の母親と同じ "異界のアレ" ----そんなことがあるだろうか?
「あれ、やっぱり幻ってことなのか?」
“Then, was it an illusion after all?”
「幻としては本物だ」
“It was as real as the illusion.”
「はあ?」
“Huh?”
「本物とか幻とか考えたことはなかったけどな。でも、今じゃ、異界詣でをした奴の頭ン中に幻光虫が反応して、会いたいと願った相手の姿になるって説明に納得している。会話も呼び出した側が勝手に作ってるんだ。だから、相手は、こっちが聞きたいことしか言わない。励ましてほしいと思ったら励ましてくれるし、叱ってほしいと思ったら厳しく叱る」
「へえ----」
“Really…”
ワッカらしくない、わかりやすい説明だ。ティーダは不意に理解した。
Wakka didn’t seem to understand the explanation. Tidus suddenly understood.
この、親切だが融通のきかない年上の友人は、幼い頃から信じてきたエボンの教えが欺瞞だったことを知ってしまった。それでも、人生は続く。心の拠り所などなくしても、生きていかねばならない。ワッカは、残りの人生を歩むために、世界を、エボンの教え抜きで理解しようと努めたのだろう。それが、この明快な答えの正体なのだ。
「ここはビサイド。異界じゃないだろ? ってことは、俺は本物ッス」
“Here on Besaid. It’s not the Farplane? I am real.”
言いながらティーダはワッカの脇腹を摘まんだ。わざとらしい悲鳴を上げながら、ワッカは駆け出した。
