While playing Tales of Xillia 2, I noticed that the game constantly searches for DLC during start-up. I decided to check out what the Sony network had available. Listed amongst the obligatory character costumes, I noticed that levels where for sale.
Is this common?
Would you purchase character levels if you could?

Hell no. Part if my FF gaming experience is drinking several Budweisers and grinding levels. Good times.

Yep, buying levels would rob me of precious podcast listening time, or being introduced to some of the background songs in games.

Would never purchase levels, if the game was so bad that leveling up normally was out of the question i simply wouldn't play lol.

I guess I understand the idea of buying levels in an MMO with lots of endgame content. I don't understand buying it for a console RPG, though. Unless I am missing something. I don't recall Tales games having "endgame content." They just have content.

I wouldn't buy levels in a single player RPG. The game should be designed in a way that leveling never feels like a chore. If it does, then I just don't play that game.

My thought exactly a game should never feel like a job to play, if it does why play it, with so many great games already out there why waste time. Hell even though some of the older FF games are less exciting and not as fun as to grind levels they were never bad or made me feel bored or frustrated enough to by willing to pay to skip it.

Buying levels? Really!! That's outrageous. A game that is a RPG that let's you buy levels is out side one of the main points of a RPG. And that is GRINDING. Its the very life blood of playtime and game experience in any RPG. If I don't have to do that then just give it to me as a movie since I am no longer playing your merchandise as a game anymore. Its now basicly a movie with pause points.

This speaks mainly to the new "casual" player. There are a lot of people that only game on their phone these days. Now, i do not agree with it, nor would i buy levels. But i can see what they were thinking. They are targeting the casual gamer. The guy/gal who doesn't "have time" to devote to an expansive RPG.
P.S. I know the knee jerk reaction is to say "don't play the game then". That won't actually happen, and you can't blame a game company from trying to make some cash from people who fall into that category.

Who's to say that they won't make games so difficult to level up that you need to buy levels in order to advance? I know that's a little extreme but with games being shipped incomplete only to have players buy the rest of the game via DLC it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm okay with story-based DLC. I'm not so okay with alternate costumes. And I really don't like the idea of being able to buy levels. What would be the point of playing the game then?

I love the DLC for Dragon Age Orgin(The only game i have played with DLC), something i greatly enjoy is more story content that allows the player to do more and get more immersed in the game. Also the enjoyment of getting all the achievements is something I love, makes me feel like I got the most out of the game :-)
But DLC that would allow you to buy level would almost seem to defeat the spirit of the game where working toward a goal fills you with accomplishment in the end. It's like reading a book cover to cover and getting that rush at the end, buying levels amounts to asking someone to give you a synopses of the book rather then read it yourself. Yes you may get the jist of it but the experience will be different.
Of course i can definitely understand developers trying to get more casual people interested, but maybe rather then focus on helping them bypass leveling, why not just make it more fun. Playing South Park The Stick of Truth right now and the leveling is so fun i never even notice it till nearly half way through the game.

Tales games are notorious and have gotten backlash for their DLC.
I prefer my FF games to have 0 DLC and if they do then I want it to be done like Mass Effect or Batman Arkham City where you get a new story chapter and big new location and enemies and extra stuff to do like 1 year after the game came out.

Honestly i would not buy them. But they are there for people who want to just enjoy the story and do not want to spend the hours grinding out levels. So i understand what they are for.

Ah DLC. Everyone complains but so many people buy it that it is firmly established in a viable business model.
I personally wouldn't buy levels but I would buy new missions/chapters/ story content.
