So I am watching the Desolation of Smaug. Yep, extended, erected, all the extras (though not the statues... this time).
I really liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I used to say that when I retired I would wake up, start the movies, go back to sleep, and call it a great day.
I liked watching the first Hobbit movie, singing and all. I did not see it a midnight, like I did with the Rings movies, but I did see the earliest show on the Friday it opened. I did the same for the second movie. But I ended up being bored, frustrated, and frustrated at being bored during the second movie. I was sick. So I went to see it again, and felt the same way. I thought, maybe I am too old and the movie is too long for me. But, while watching the BD at home, I still felt the same.
So, is this a Star Wars type thing that I am experiencing? Is this new trilogy just "not my trilogy"? Or does anyone have similar thoughts?
I love the Appendices, by the way. Same with the first one. I love all the making of, behind the scenes, and hidden histories.
I will see the third movie the day it comes out. I will buy the super-duper version when it is released. With expensive statue if Weta makes a neat one.

I like both. I grew up on the lotr trilogy in my teens and now i have the hobbit it my late 20's and its awesome.
Now is a great time for fantasy lovers and scifi. Yeah lucas raped the star wars series over and over and then had his way on doctor jones.. but owells..
It happens though. Some cant enjoy the next trilogy in a series cause its not the same. The style, the story telling, pacing and all that. I enjoyed Peters work though with both lotr and hobbit...even if he did make 3 movies out of a smallish book.

The Hobbit films aren't as dense as the LOTR's films... Partly the source material, sure, but Jackson's a filmmaker, and has shown that he knows how to make a good film. I think he's been a little self indulgent with the recent Hobbit films (the regular cuts feel like extended cuts).
Filmmakers tend to do that after having a lot of success.
The middle section of the first Hobbit bugged me, so I actually preferred the second one. I liked the tone much more.
Jackson also does best in the horror genre, and perhaps it's the whimsical nature of the Hobbit that he doesn't do as well with, as it is that LOTR had a lot more dark material to pull from.
Remember watching Fellowship for the first time? Scared the shit outta me.
I still get the extended stuff because the extra materials are just awesome.

I watched the second one with Joe in the 3d 40 frames thing. It was fucked up. First I can't see in 3d because I'm blind in my left eye, second, the 40 frames thing gave me a headache it was like it was being fast forwarded but, moving slow enough to take forever.

I agree Gammon... The LOTR movies are preferred. As is the original star wars trilogy.

Yeah, and Legolas' cameo was unnecessary.

Yeeeah...my friends were talking about that on fb the other day. Kinda silly how he threw him in there and added the lame romance sideplot. Why..why?!
