So, in order to play along with you all i put FF9 on the back-burner and have decided to play this. But i wanted to ask if you all had any tips? The furthest story wise i got was when the rival school invaded the main school. The only secret stuff ive done was the Minotaur brothers and Diablo (Lost big time). So any other tips or secrets to be on the look out for?

Avoid leveling up at all cost.

Avoid leveling up at all cost. I second this. Avoid leveling up. Instead, spend time drawing magic or refining magic from cards. Then junction that magic to your stats. Enemies levels scale up with you, but they get more improvement per level up than you do. So playing the game at level 100 is much harder than playing at level 10.

never level up. draw from every enemy. junction magic into stronger magic and then junction it to yourself. get Squall's best weapon quickly. Always stay low health with squall and use his limit break constantly on every boss.

FFVIII is kind of the black sheep of the FF family, isn't it? How many other FF games is the best possible advice "Don't level up." Usually "No Leveling" is a challenge, not meant to make the game easier.

I know we Final Fantasy VIII lovers are in the minority, and I'm guessing that I'm further in the minority when saying that I find leveling up to be no problem at all (obviously with every level being 1000 exp). If you junction properly, If you keep up with magic, If you use your GF learns properly, then leveling up is not the issue. The game curves for a reason, to make sure you're utilizing the functions of the game! If you get to level 40 but you're still using tier 1 and low tier 2 magic, then that's the game telling you to go get more magic. (Granted, it can be a problem because since the monsters level up with you, sometimes getting that magic can be the part you can't accomplish).
Overall, I think leveling is just fine. with exception to my first play through, I have put my characters to level 100 with no trouble, and I find the final boss to be of adequate difficulty and all the fun of dungeon if not more fun.

I did a normal playthrough the first time I played this game, but when I replayed it recently I did a low level run. The low level run was much more fun for me. For the low level run I did a lot of work up front getting cards and refining them into all the magic I needed. It was probably 4 hours worth of grinding for cards, magic, and GF abilities. The best part is that after I finished that I never had to worry about abilities or grinding for the rest of the game. I just played through and enjoyed the story without any random encounters or grinding.

Well I'd say go for bahamut. Kaleb did it and even though he leveled up to like 23 he got 100 megalixers from it which really helped him out when fighting ultimecia.

The best way to play this game is to learn all of the GF abilities, such as the "mod" and "refine" abilities. Certain monsters and cards can be refined into some of the games best magic, meaning you don't have to draw from enemies or on the islands closest to heaven/hell. I can get the lionheart and spells like "death" and "water" before even leaving balamb.
