N64 had a FF6 tech demo. PS2 had a FF8 tech demo. PS3 had a FF7 tech demo.
I remember fans going crazy for an FF8 remake on PS2.
Then FF7 fans like myself wanted PS3 remake of the game based on the tech demo we got. Sure it was just a tech demo but a lot of people wanted it to be real.

The Final Fantasy VIII on PS2 wasn't nearly out of left field like the FFVII was on PS3, and they clearly stated it was a tech demo, instead of just labeling it and then leaving it open-ended.
But I do like the FFVIII tech demo. There are mods out to help clean up the FMV from FFVIII on Steam release, and they look okay, but not like this.

I actually think it would have been easier to remake FF8 on the PS2 than doing an FF7 remake on the PS2 or even PS3. FF8 seems simpler to bring the PS2 by just using FF10 tools.
