Yes, I am BUMPing up an oldie.
Just started watching Death Note and am 10 episodes from the end.
I like it.
I had not watched it because it seemed like a lot of people were into it. I know, stupid reason. But so many times I have fallen into the trap of watching something because it came highly recommended or was really popular and just did not like it. It might also have to do with being in a different place than I was in 2006.
Have any of you found a hidden anime gem by giving a series a second chance down the road?

Haha oh man, I actually just watched Death Note myself about 3 months ago. For the same reason as you, I didn't watch it for a long time- and then I saw it on Netflix and thought why not. I do the same thing for ridiculous comedy- I never subjected myself to Napolean Dynamite because everyone quoted it for a year. Not going to lie, the ending theme song in the 2nd half of Deathnote, Zetsubou Billy? That's my jam.

I should probably finally watch Napolean Dynamite. I usually hunt down theme songs and collect them on my iPod. I don't consider myself a Jpop fan, but their a certain bands that I have a tone of music from because they are used in anime. Like, Do As Infinity. Those have been a pain to collect though because I can only find them as imports. Still holding off on the last two albums until I can find them for less than 30.
I have not really heard the Death Note songs or any anime themes from the shows I have watched in Netflix. While binging, the beginning and end get cut off. I will need to stop that as I go forward, so that I can let the songs grow on me and add them to my neuromap.

I will need to stop that as I go forward, so that I can let the songs grow on me and add them to my neuromap. Glad to see I'm not the only one hoarding sweet JPop tunes from anime. I guess I can throw a few anime out there that I like. I'm super picky and have episode limits on what I'll watch- except for DragonBall Z, 50ish episodes is my cutoff. Nonsense like Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach getting up there with like 300 episodes is just no. Elfen Lied- saw a few other people had it listed, this is amazing and dark. Rin:Daughters of Mnemosyne- Super weird, only about 4ish hours. Serial Experiments Lain- OMG. Waaaay ahead of it's time. Made in the late 90's, early 2000's I believe, and focuses mainly on people's relationship with computers and online personas. Still relevant. Chobits- shoot me. This one is adorable, and makes you think. I also like anime movies- much easier to digest a 2 or 3 hour flick than devote to several seasons. I saw Appleseed pop up on someone's list- huzzah, that one is amazing! King of Thorn Perfect Blue Angel's Egg (Yoshitaka Amano did the art for this one. It's weeeeeird) Ninja Scroll Memories Tekkonkinkreet Tokyo Godfathers Also, one last one- this isn't anime, it's animation, written by Rob Zombie- The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. It's just....I can't even. I made the mistake of watching it for the first time under the influence of some questionable substances, and was blown away. Then I went back and watched it sober, and still loved it. It feels like a mash-up between South Park and Rat Fink. Strange stuff.

Because of this post I went into my storage and dug out my anime VHS collection, which was mostly copied via two VCRs and a blockbuster card back in the late nineties. This is what I found.
Series Anime: Dirty Pair Flash Gunsmith Cats Evangelion Some import horrible quality taped off Japanese television Dragon Ball Z that I bought on the down low. Cutesy Honey Golden boy The six part Oh My Goddess series A whole lot of Ranma 1/2
Some one off movies: Plastic Little Vampire Hunter D Fatal Fury 1,2, and the Motion Picture (these are truly excellent movies, especially if you're a fan of the video game series)
Some taped off television VHS: The whole original run of Sailor Moon The Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z The horribly edited and voice acted Dragon Ball A bunch of Samurai Pizza Cats A bunch of Megaman. Not the shorty American style one. The awesome anime style one.
I would high recommend any and all of this to any anime fan. When I talk about anime with modern fans, I find that I'm stuck in a time warp, but I'm ok with that.

Your mention of Chobits reminds me of Fruits Basket. I liked the beginning but it seemed (like many do) to go a different direction in the end. I am sure the animes have nothing in common, but that one was my guilty pleasure.

And not just because I am a dad, I just did not expect him to have that much of a role to play in the story.

Just some random stuff I recommend. Good job on watching Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, DBZ and Death Note. Watch these. Metropolis (anime movie) Redline (anime movie) Interstella (anime movie with Daft Punk music) Initial D (Imagine Fast n Furious anime) Hellsing Hellsing Ultimate (Alucard is such a badass) Black Lagoon Appleseed original 1988 movie and then the new CGI ones. Madoka Magica Valvrave the Liberator (a recent amazing anime that is about Mechs and reminds a little bit of NGE at times) Elfen Lied (probably the most violent anime series but the intro theme is one of the best ever) Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (over the top hilarious anime) Then here is just a huge list but its missing other stuff I would recommend. Gunslinger Girl Speed Grapher Queen Blade Genocyber Darker than Black Higurashi Baccano Gintama Gantz Berserk Trigun Canaan Code Geass Fullmetal panic Fullmetal alchemist…. Haruhi Suzumiya Lucky Star Magical girl lyricaly nanonha Tengen Toppa Gurren Langan Guilty Crown* Inuyasha Yu yu hakusho One piece Naruto School Days Fairy tail Sword art online Rozen Maiden Future diary Uta kata Inuyasha Hunter hunter Sailor moon Lupin Detective conan / Case Closed Steins gate Clannad Angel beats Future diary Gurren lagan LA Blue Girl (for lolz its hentai) Bible Black (for lolz its hentai) Urotoksi (insane anime movie series very R rated) Violene Jack (3 part anime short series from the 80s very very violent) Queen blade Highschool of the dead DXD Sakura Trick (its yuri) Oreimo (subject matter might creep you out but its a comedy series and is hilarious) Hyperdimension neptunia Persona4 Robotech Mecha anime: Gundam Seed, 00, Zeta, Victory, Unicorn, G gundam, Full Metal Panic Getter Robo (Armageddon, new getter, Mazinger Mazinkaiser Code Geass Gurren Lagann Gunbuster Rahxephon Aquarion Bokurano (movie) Zoids? Macross Blue gender Soukou no strain Giant robo (movie) Linebarrels of iron Dual parallel trouble adventure The king of braves gaogaigar Star driver Eureka 7 Goddanar Martian successor nadesico Heroic age Tenchi muyo war on germinar Gun x sword Just looking at this list and realizing that i've seen most of them and then some really makes me think "wow i've spent way to much fucking time watching anime..." and it just keeps coming... glad i got crunchy roll and just watch everything online now. I remember buying individual DVD's when i was in high school and waiting forever for the next 4 episodes on the next disc to come out. That shit was expensive too.

Also are you talking about Megaman NT warrior anime series or which one? Either way those were great. lol at the bad voice Dragon ball dub though.

Gargantia on both Crunchyroll and Netflix was pretty good. Hunting down the OVAs to finish off the series. Knights of Sidonia Season 2 is hitting Netflix just in time for a 4th of July binge.
