I don't know how pertinent this actually is, but since Final Fantasy VIII is on the cards soon, I thought you'd like to know that this Final Fantasy features what is known as a 'Boot leg paradox', or a time loop paradox. SeeD is set up to fight the Sorceresses in the future, and Squal and the gang do indeed fight Ultimecia, first as Edea then as herself. When time starts to return to normal after Ultimecia has well and truly fucked it up, Squal goes back in time to when the gang were in an orphanage with Edea looking after them. He tells Edea that she must set up SeeD to prevent the Sorceres from the future from winning.
So where did it begin? If Squal didn't tell Edea to start SeeD, he wouldn't have been a member of SeeD and so wouldn't have been fighting Ultimecia, hence he wouldn't have been able to go back in time to tell Edea to set it all up!
Gotta love some good old Time Travel! (I'm joking here. I think Time travel is just... A weak literary device. There's too much that could go wrong I think..!)
