When the hosts get to these games, it will be interesting to see how they approach the playthroughs and reviews. These games can be "finished" in one sitting. The games are also very similar. If this is two reviews (since it is two games), then the first review could be on the original and the second review could be comparing and contrasting the two games. Or both games can be in one episode that discusses games and then compares/contrasts how they play.
I am now at 42000 RM, and I think I prefer the original game. I have started to notice that I have to fight with the "slide" notes when I am walking around. The "cursor" starts to move on its own. If I am already moving, this sometimes causes me to overshoot the mark. I think the quests are fun, especially since they count as plays in the main game. But I miss the "found songs" (or whatever they were called) from the first game. They were the same songs, but had different patterns from the main game. You could also farm crystals from them. I could play one sound 10 times, and probably get 7 or 8 crystals of the color I needed. To do this in the second game, I have to play through the whole quest to get to the mini-boss and boss battles. Some of the quests are 10+ songs. Sure, I can start a new quest to get the multiple crystal drop, but I still have to play through the entire quest. Plus it may not be the color crystal I want.
I do appreciate the ton of characters there are, especially the special unlock if you played the demo. My current party is two Tifas and two Lightnings. I just finished playing as a party of FFVIII characters. I also like that you can play against Chaos multiple times instead of just at 10K and then never again.

Did the original have many other differences?
I only have the second. I am also going for a party full of FF9 characters.

The original had a third type of song that is severely underrepresented in the second game. Less characters and less music, but the best characters and the best music. I also don't remember having to fight the hold triggers so much.

I like Curtain Call. You are continually unlocking EMS, and yes they are few and far between.
I find the new controls to be a fun change of pace as well.
They're both unique and fun, it's worth trying both.

Do you notice a change in the hold triggers for the "walking stages"?
And just to clarify, liking one more does not mean that I dislike the other.

Yeah, FMS, Hold Triggers, mainly on Ultimate. It feels like it is trying to help me, but instead I find myself fighting with it or overshooting my note. I have basically stopped playing Ultimate songs. Basic also feels like a drag, so I am limiting myself to Expert songs and whatever appears in the quests.

I like both and recommend both.

I really prefer Curtain Call, but I think that's mainly because of the song selection? But the FMS hold triggers are definitely off. Especially on ultimate. I could usually chain a while song, but those stupid hold triggers keep breaking it.

I like Curtain Call too but its true that the FMS in the game are ruined on Ultimate because they changed the gameplay for it compared to the previous game. Also the EMS from the original are missing in Curtain Call so you won't get any gameplay videos for FF1-13

The EMS, although enjoyable, were my least favourite Music Stage. That said actually, my quick start song in the Final Fantasy Theatrhythm Curtain Call Special Arrangement Medly. (Prize for the longest and most surferfluious use of words I'm a title goes to...) it's EMS. It actually got me a bit emotional the first time I played it.
I've said too much...

Unfortunately I only played the original on the iPhone. While it was a fun way to pass the time, the touch screen made anything over expert near impossible to complete. Having said that, I think I like curtain call for the maps and the impressive number of songs, not to mention songs from other series like Chrono Trigger.

I understand why songs are a buck, but I can't bring myself to do it. If only there was a dollar pack of songs. Who am I kidding, I probably would not buy that either. I have a hard to buying DLC, especially when I can sometimes go buy a used classic for the same price.

I never buy DLC but I do when it comes to FF games... I've bought like 40+ DLC songs lol and I don't regret any of it... I play each dlc song so many times that its like I paid 2cents for each time I played them.

I'm quite the same when it comes to DLC. It just seems money grabby sometimes. A little off topic I know, but I refer to the Resident Evil 5 Mercenaries fiasco. I paid £10 for a 500kb unlock file. Rage on a stick.
However, I GET things like more songs to expand your library. Singstar, Rock Band, Guitar Hero to name a few. Curtain Call I include in this list. It's content you can choose to add to the experience, not a new game mode that was already there..!
