I played this game when it originally came out and I forced myself to finish it because it's a Final Fantasy game. By the time I finished, I hated this game so much. It was not at all what I was expecting and it was a huge letdown.
I've been playing through all the mainline games in order and I've finally reached FFXIII. This is my second playthrough of the game. Imagine my surprise when I started and actually kind of liked the game.
I think I'm around the half way point of my second playthrough right now. It's definitely not my favorite Final Fantasy game, but it's actually pretty good. I think a huge part of my problem with it the first time was my expectations of what a Final Fantasy game is. I hope I still like it by the time I finish this second playthrough, but I can already tell my overall impression of the game will be much better after I finish this time.
Has anyone else had a similar reaction to the game? Anyone out there play it more than once?

FF13 got lots of good reviews when it came out and sold a lot. But all I heard was negative stuff about the game from the those that played it. I recently beat FF7 around that time and got into the "I remember I love FF so much" fan mode. So I rushed out to save for a ps3 and FF13. I expected a bad game but I convinced myself that I would be the judge of that. I paced myself and played 1-3 hours a day. I enjoyed the story, gameplay etc. I got to like 68 hours when I finally beat the game and was like "wtf this was actually good and enjoyable" I don't know why it gets so much hate. I then went online to talk about it with people and whenever I brought it up people immediately bashed it and thought I was trolling when I said I enjoyed it Luckily opinion is starting to change and give it 5-10 years and people will start to have fond memories of it. I plan on replaying it again soon especially if it comes to PS4 as part of a trilogy collection. Also FF13 had great music and that alone was worth the purchase. The main complaint about the game seemed aimed at "just spam the X button during battle" and "game is so linear hallway walking simulator" Yet replaying FFX again reminded me that 10 started the trend of this and that game is actually loved a lot more.

I find X to be a better game than XIII, in terms of story and music. But we will have to wait and see how the two compare. If I could only get through VIII...

I like all the games for certian reasons. I never found it fair to judge one game to another since its usually different.
I liked X for the return to turn based and the turn chart.
I enjoyed XIII but i dont think i can play it again for awhile. The first 6 hours is so boring..

In a way it was nice to have a defined path to charge down, but once you get to Pulse it's a ton of grinding.

I started a discussion about why I LIKE the story of XIII, and I honestly think it has my FAVORITE battle system. It's not really about managing all of the minute details as something like FF Tactics, or any of the others, but I like the idea of play a sort of "Field General" and issuing tasks/commands to my allies. I think there's a lot of strategy and TIMING involved. And there are few things more rewarding then finally getting a stagger, and launching a gigantic monster into the air I also love the music. I have a few of the Battle Songs on my Playlists for when I teach Martial Arts Classes!

I liked it the first time I played through, even though I spent the first few hours in a state of confusion.

I seriously never played a Final Fantasy game that I could say that I hated. Honestly. I don't know if I am just a pushover in terms of enjoying video games, but actually hating a game is rare for me. Sure there are games that might not hold my interest, but I can't think of any games that I actually HATED.
That being said, I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII and even XIII-2. I did not play Lightning Returns yet. It seems kind of like a Dirge of Cerberus spinoff type game, though admittedly I haven't even googled it.

I'm the same way - I tend to find the best in everything and everyone, and even if there are problems, I usually look past them. So with few exceptions, I've never hated games, either. That being said... Lightning Returns is seriously awesome. Super fun gameplay mechanics, and it wraps up EVERY remaining Plot Thread in the XIII Universe in a nice, neat package, with a bow on top. Ending is brilliant, and we actually get to see Lightning develop as a CHARACTER. Check it out

I love the XIII trilogy, I may be one of few, and I can't wait for you guys to start covering it. XIII is the first game(I think the only game) I ever attained a platinum trophy for the PSnetwork. I'd love to help you guys trek through this game! I think the story is great, the characters are well developed, the game play is awesome, it's aesthetically beautiful, and for the first game I think being a little linear is a good thing. I use the 3 ladies, Vanille is a beast!

Final Fantasy XIII is one of the two Final Fantasy games that I've started but never finished (the other being Final Fantasy VIII). But FFXIII is one where I tried to go back and play it again. I got further the second time around, but once again stopped playing. I sold my copy several months ago, which is a first. The only other FF game I've sold was Final Fantasy X (PS2) because I got it on the PS3.

I know exactly what your talking about. When 12 first came out I was so pumped and then i started to play it and just could not get into the change in the battle system that I just gave up and never played it.
Then when 13 came out I felt this urge to play ALL the ff games in sequence and when I picked 12 back up I found it to be a lot of fun and really easy to get used to.

I feel like we've all gone through that "I forgot how much I love FF" phase at one point haha.
I had mine recently after Type-0 came out, I hadn't played FF since XIIILR came out, then right after Type-0 released, I'm playing going back to play games that I hadn't played! I've only got FF2 to finish now, then I'd have 100% them all, but I probably won't get to that game for a long time
