To my knowledge, this is the first FF game with visible enemies. While you were unable to avoid most fights in this game, I was wondering whether you prefer random enemies or enemies you can see but can avoid when you choose to?

Call me old school but i prefer not to see them, i find the unexpected nature to the battles can make them more fun. As long as the rate of battles isn't insane like FF1 and a few other games tend to be.

I like random encounters. Having said that, I like Bravely Defaults ability to raise of lower the chance to have them. I also thought Kingdom Heart's random encounters were novel at the time (but then one just memorized where the enemies would appear).

I also thought Kingdom Heart's random encounters were novel at the time (but then one just memorized where the enemies would appear). i agree, bravely default was probably the best all around battle system in a JRPG. I maxed out my levels and job classes just over halfway through the game, so it was nice being able to turn off the encounters.

I have to go with seeing the enemies as well. I think that seeing them makes it feel more "real"- like that's how things would look if FF was happening IRL.

I think this is a MMO idea, the visible monsters. I know it wasn't invented in MMOs, but they certainly have refined this idea and it is a trademark of that genre. I have a feeling those who do not like seeing monsters do not enjoy MMOs and those who do have played their share of them.
I also like being able to see the monsters, especially in modern games with the graphical caliber that allows for rending many on screen at once. It is more realistic.

For you folks who like to see enemies, what are your thoughts on being able to manipulate the battle before it begins. In Persona games you can usually get an extra turn if your ambush the enemies (or them you) and in Xillia 2 you can cause a little bit of damage before battle begins. I don't remember how it worked in Xenosaga. In Devil Survivor and Chrono Cross, I think battle just begins.
Or do you guys prefer seeing enemies and having combat just begin like mmo/adventure style?

Personally, I feel like each game handles it differently and I am ok with that. I am very used to being able to see monsters and casting all of my buffs and preparing before I jump in. However, I am not crippled without that. I can play with a random encounter game just fine.

in FF13 you can sneak on enemies and gain an advantage if they don't see you.
In FF13-2 and FF Lighting Returns FF13 you can attack enemies and then enter a battle where they have less health.

I would enjoy when games allow for a more prepared strategym when it comes to battles. I like being fully prepared for a battle unless I can't help it. As some of you know it bothers the crap out of me when I am under geared and under leveled to a fight. It pits me and my allies atva disadvantage during a fight. Now with that. I do enjoy a challenge as long as its on even playing field. Then it all comes down to raw skill. Those are the truly best fights.

I think I prefer random battles. If there are visible enemies and I'm level-grinding I have to keeping leaving and then re-entering the screen to make enemies spawn. And as far as getting an advantage on visible enemies, I'll take any advantage I can get. Although I will say that in games where the eve or are visible an you can get an advantage by sneaking up on them it almost feels like a requirement to make the battles easier, especially in FF13 where a sneak attack will cause the enemy to stagger.

I am with you on this one. Xillia 2 has visible enemies. I have to leave the area to get them to respawn. But I noticed with larger maps that enemies will respawn once I leave the vicinity, but not necessarily the area. So with a large map, I can run a circle around the outer wall and have an endless stream of enemies. The downside to this is Xillia 2 is that non of the items respawn, though.
