I'm kind of torn about the random-vs-visible battles argument. It really depends on the game. Chrono Cross nailed it, I think, because battles are rather infrequent and there's not really any grinding necessary, so visible battles work. However, if the game is going to require you to grind and level, then random battles are fine for me. I also really prefer FFX's method of allowing you to get No Encounters equipment, so you can select when you want to battle.
Depends on the game. For the most part, though, I'd say I prefer visible enemies. You don't waste as much time with random battles that you don't want that way.
FFXII nailed it with this, too, I'd say. My main irritation with FFXII is the low drop rates of the items you want...

I like both so its ridiculously hard to choose but ill go with visible enemies. A cool part about visible enemies is giving you the feel of the scale of the enemies. It really shows you how big or small the enemies are compared to your surroundings. On the other hand random battles are generally preferable for grinding although i did not have any issues with grinding ff12 even though their were visible enemies in that game

I like visible enemies because it really develops the world. As neat as it is to jump out into the world in VII, VIII, and IX, It is also sterile and barren. Seeing the monsters on your screen in the later games really makes it a much more immersive experience overall.

Monsters don't come to existence out of thin air, they are part of the world just like nature and the people of the planet. It seems that ff15 will master this concept

Woah woah woah. Pump the breaks. . .
XV may do this well, and I haven't even seen any footage of the demo yet. I know that I really think XII did it well through.

Your right, its too early to say 15 has perfected the visible enemy without the final product of the game being released yet. But from what I have seen and played in the demo the way they use the visible enemy format is the best I have seen in the series and maybe any RPG I can think of. Its pretty much like FF12 on steroids with alot more realism and obviously being graphically superior. I definetly recommend checking out some footage or play the demo that comes with ff type O to see what I mean

It looked so sweet though. Visible enemies ftw- I know the FF VII remake has been a hotly debated subject in terms of how it's going to be changed...but I really hope this is something they switch up. I'd love to see the enemies in the remake. *opens umbrella for protection from the storm of backlash*

I'd love to see the enemies in the remake. *opens umbrella for protection from the storm of backlash* I just looked that up and man, oh man, it made me feel giddy. Also, about FFVII, I really agree that they should make visible enemies in the remake. I think they're going to have a very tough time striking the right balance for that game. If I were in their shoes, I'd have to view it solely from a profit perspective, which sounds cold... But honestly, think about how much people have been begging for a remake. These are people who think the original game was one of the greatest things to ever grace a television screen. If you stick too strongly to the original, people will hate that it's just a graphical update. If you stray too far, old fans will hate that it doesn't do justice to the original. If I were Square Enix, I wouldn't have announced it until I had spent years and years planning on how to strike that balance.
