I'm playing through final fantasy 9 for the first time and I'm a bit of a completionist when it comes to games. I'm currently paranoid that I'm going to miss a crucial piece of equipment to earning everyone's abilities 100%. Is there any items or equipment I need to pay special attention to getting? I'm currently at the end of the 3rd disc.

Ohhh good game i love 9 i think it is the game i played the most in the series:-) Some side stuff:
Excalibur 2 This is, unquestioningly, the hardest ultimate weapon to get. You must reach the end of Memoria, the final area in the game, within 12 hours! Check our ghttp://www.uffsite.net/ff9/excalibur2.php for more information.
I never even bothered, yes it is possible but you would be unable to do a lot of other stuff and would decrease the fun of the game, don't think I ever bothered to get.
Other side stuff are the chocobo treasure hunting mini game as well as the other ultimate weapons.
The hades fight is a nice thing to do so you can start synthesizing.
There are a few others but that the big ones i can remember, hopefully i can play again soon and refresh my memory.

I have already come to terms with not achieving this. I feel that's a bit extreme for one weapon. And racing through a game is very opposite my play style

Side note I really hate the chocobo quest in this game. I feel it's very frustrating and I have been smoking a lot more because of it

Getting the Excalibur 2 is almost as ridiculous as getting the damn zodiac spear. Why would you NOT open a chest unless you had a guide?

Getting the Excalibur 2 is almost as ridiculous as getting the damn zodiac spear. Why would you NOT open a chest unless you had a guide? Well zodiac spear the whole idea is it is near imposable to get without knowing about the chests beforehand as anyone that saw any chest opens it. But at least if you have a guide very easy and you can still do all the other side stuff. Better then Excalibur 2 as you miss out on alot of the game by rushing toward the end to get that item, kinda like a race to a bottom of a cliff, 1 person marches down slowly and safely to reach the bottom, the other one jump off a ledge and gets to the bottom but sacrifices safety in the same way that by rushing you sacrifice fun. Yes you get the strongest weapon in the game but you also miss out on alot of stuff that you could have actually enjoyed for a weapon which while impressive is not worth the hassel. Excalibur 2 attack is 108 is a holy damage weapon and has some nice abitlites and Steiner Ultimate weapon, his second best is Ragnarok at 87 attack and pretty decent. Only way i would ever go for Excalibur is if i had already beat the game a bunch of times and just wanted to challenge myself.

It just felt a little tedious like they forced it just to lengthen the game, as FF9 is rather short compared to many other FF games.

I think the most important thing is to not sell off any of your old equipment, at least without looking it up. There are pieces of equipment that you get that can be used to make more powerful weapons later in the game, but a couple pieces of these equipments are easy to find in the beginning of the game, but completely lost and unobtainable once you get to the point when you start wanting to make new weapons out of them. That stopped me from getting one of Zidane's more powerful weapons.
