I am kind of anti multivitamins and supplements in general. I do take whey protein immediately after a lifting workout though. My first advice is stop spending money on them.
A scale just shows you how you are affected by earth's gravity. A pant size just shows you how many inches your pants are. The only real measurement is progress. If you push yourself one step farther every day, you'll make progress. It isn't going to be fast and it's going to take work, but you'll know it when it's there. Don't sweat it man, it's not worth worrying about. It sounds like you are on the righteous path.

Friday weigh in: 194, up .8 from last week. I pretty much kept this weight for the whole week after gain during the weekend. So my weight goal for this week is to lose weight during the weekend and maintain that lower weight until next Friday. PHAT Goals: *If I go to the movies today, do not get a drink. This is incredibly hard for me because I always get a headache in a movie theater if I do not get a coke. Maybe I will buy or sneak in a water and see what that does. *Play Curtain Call with Shinryu. This should be fun, will strengthen a connection to the community, and get me interacting with more than just a two year-old. *Do not grab Taco Bell on the way home from my Mom's house on Thursday. These food habits are hard to break for me, but Thursday is turning into a pig out day and most of the time I am not even hungry. I will leave an hour earlier than usual from my Mom's, that way I will get home sooner and just eat dinner at a normal time. *On going goal: This one I break all the time, but let's see if I can do it this week. Only drink soda between the hours of Noon to 6pm. I usually have two good days followed by one bad. I will weigh myself when I wake up, but I hope to have broken even. I got down to 190.6 because I knew I was going to pig out this weekend. I may have eaten too much pizza on Thursday, though. Goal Round Up: *Accomplished! I did not get a drink when I went to the movies. I actually ended up going three times this week. I am going back to work next week, so I guess I was trying to squeeze a bunch of movie going in. Each time I did not get a drink. Only the third time did I feel really dehydrated. I also did not feel the intense need to pee during the movies. I did feel a need to go buy a drink, but I just ignored it. *Failed! I did not play Curtain Call with Shinryu, but I did play with two other strangers. I played the game to death in preparation to playing Shinryu and ended up just playing it too much to want to play it more. Lesson? Beware overkill/road-to-hell/etc *Accomplished! I did skip the Taco Bell visiting this Thursday. I was not able to leave earlier, but had a little snack in the car. I did end up eating fast food at 10pm on my way home from the movies, though. *Failed! I kept my usual habit for soda. The goal is possibly unreasonable at this time. So instead of picking random times, I will look at the spirit of the goal - which is to drink less soda (especially not start and end the day with soda). A better goal would be to state just that - do not drink soda as my first or last drink of the day. That I have been keeping about 90% of the time.

It's one of the most difficult habits to break in my opinion. I used to eat fast food and drink soda all the time a few years ago. When I started losing weight, they were the first to go. I haven't eaten fast food in years, and I only have diet soda maybe once a week with some alcohol. (I don't think I can drop that vice) I actually can't even drink regular soda anymore, to me it tastes like drinking syrup. A friend of mine is also trying to wean herself off soda- she's trying to have an equal amount of water for the soda she drinks. I did hear that Taco Bell is starting delivery service soon. There is no minimum for delivery. My willpower against fast food is about to be tested like never before.

Also if you have a hard time not drinking soda why not try to super fill up on water and then have a soda. There is a app on droid not sure on iOS but if you tell it your weight it will tell you how much water you need to drink per day. Try drinking the amount stated on the app and then try a soda. Do this for a week and I promise the crazings will seice. The water cleans hot your body parts and lubricates them. You will notice the syrupy fast of soda and the high sugar content. I have been in the water plan for a month and 3weeks now and I have not had any soda. Just a thought.

One of the reasons I like to go to the Taco Bell's around here is because of the memories attached to them. I think I will be unaffected by the delivery :-) I just need to stop driving to them.

So a loss of 2.2 for the week. I have a big dinner with my family this coming Sunday, and I begin teaching again for the next 20 weeks or so this coming week. I expect to gain from the dinner, but I don't know what to expect from work. My weight goal for this coming week will be to just break even. PHAT Goals? *Don't spend more time planning the class than I do teaching it. *Don't grab food on the way home from work. *Still find time to take my daughter to my Mom's house sometime during the week (and not stop by that Taco Bell on the way home, hehe). Continuing Goal: Keep my mini exercise routine at least three times during the week.

ok i am working out and i am on a diet but i have told myself never to get on a scale until i see some dramatic results to encourage me to continue on my goal reaching 200 lbs. started at 271 lbs. i am currently 6.1" in height. so my question is can you guys think of some other ways to show progress without actually getting on a scale. phat goal: find a way to stop having the sandwich at tropical smoothie for lunch "curse you delicious flatbread sandwich". complete a set of 20 pushups 3x in one day push myself to jog 1 entire mile. buy more groceries instead eating whatever my parents get me. take more multivitamins. phat goal #1 failed phat goal #2 failed phat goal #3 success <--- YES!! phat goal #4 success phat goal #5 success it seems i struggle with willpower at tropical smoothie. I MUST DO BETTER!!! i am still only doing 15 before i have crumble under my own weight. 20 is too much for me right now so i am changing my goal. phat goals for the week: STOP EATING THE SANDWICHES AT TROPICAL SMOOTHIE. <---FOCUS !!!!! complete a set of 15 push ups 3x daily until i feel at ease. push myself to jog 1 1/4 miles strait.

Good luck on the jogging! I need to remember how to move faster than a walk. Also thanks for playing along. I thought a few more people were going to jump in. Should we keep things running in this thread or make a new thread for each week in different sections?

Hmm. I feel like this thread is enough for our needs. Though we should look into dividing our success and failures. In order to raise morale in the weight loss phat troopers.

Something tagged onto the end of a post here? I thought of making a monthly thread in Dieting. I think I did one for the month this podcast started but never followed up on it. I like the phat troopers moniker.

The monthly post thread sounds like a great idea. It will give a sense of progress since results don't really form until after 21 days. So that way we can post at either the beginning of the month or the end to show progress on the the previous month goals or current month goals.

Be cautious when you take that whey. Do your research, bud. I fully endorse whey, but you have to time exactly when you take it. I was just talking about this with someone...

Probably the best way to gauge progress is in how you feel. Personally, when I have a sedentary period, once I start getting active again, I notice better sleep and very increased levels of energy throughout the day. Without a scale, take pictures of yourself every day. I think that's even better than using a scale, because over a few weeks, you'll start to notice thinning when referencing pictures. For instance, I currently weigh 170 (@ 5'8"), which is much more than I'd like. When I was in my freshman year of college, I weighed about 140, which I remember vividly, but there are no pictures that I can compare to, which makes it seem like there's no difference. Seriously, just keep a log of pictures so you can actually see the difference instead of trusting a scale to tell you what's going on. Also works well with the muscle vs fat vs water weight, because people can lose weight without improving health, and the scale isn't a good indicator of health. Image can be, as long as you know you're active. Also, keep a log of these pictures along with a journal of writing out your progress, and keep up with it. The actual numbers and information you write is vital to keeping up.
