Yeah Silence of the Lambs is a great movie. Other good Hannibal films are Manhunter (no Anthony Hopkins) Red Dragon (Manhunter remake with Anthony Hopkins) Hannibal (sequel to Silence of the lambs is great too but has Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling) Then there is Hannibal Rising which sucks and never ever watch it... it tries to be a prequel for Hannibal as a kid but it wasn't needed. Then we have Hannibal the tv series on NBC and its REALLY REALLY good. You guys should really check it out. Its like if David Lynch decided to make a Hannibal tv series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannibal_%28TV_series%29

I love Hannibal, and have seen all those movies multiple times. Even more than the movies- the books. If you love Hannibal, you've got to read the books. Thomas Harris is a genius. I totally disagree with your opinion on Hannibal Rising. The book was fantastic- so much insight into Hannibal. The movie was decent- I think the kid who played young Hannibal absolutely nailed it. Was he Anthony Hopkins? No. Anthony Hopkins has defined the role and no one can come close, but Hannibal Rising was still, in my opinion, a great addition to Hannibal's story. All of that being said- I haven't watched the Hannibal show yet. It's the next thing I'm getting into.

The show is pretty great, shame that they are ending after the third season.
As far as the movies go I think Silence of the Lambs is definitely the best (and one of my favourites of all time), but I also really liked Hannibal. I know the critics were kind of lukewarm on it, but it had a dreamy quality to it that I quite enjoyed.
Red Dragon had an absolutely incredible cast but didn't reach it's full potential due to it being directed by the Lord of Hacks Brett Ratner.
Hannibal Rising was kind of meh for me. Pretty good for a revenge flick I suppose, but was lacking something else that made the other movies great.

I love Thomas Harris he is a great writer but he never wanted to write Hannibal Rising or do a prequel to Lecter's life story. He was forced into it. "The February 22, 2007 issue of Entertainment Weekly features a quote that suggests that the only reason Thomas Harris wrote the story was out of the fear that a Lecter prequel/origin story would inevitably be written without his involvement. Hannibal Rising film producer Dino De Laurentiis said "I say to Thomas, 'If you don't do [the prequel], I will do it with someone else... I don't want to lose this franchise. And the audience wants it...' He said, 'No. I'm sorry.' And I said, 'I will do it with somebody else.' And then he said, 'Let me think about it. I will come up with an idea.'" Not to mention that out of all the Hannibal films: "Hannibal Rising received generally negative reviews from film critics, though Ulliel's performance as Lecter was generally praised. The film garnered a 15% approval rating from 143 critics—an average rating of 3.9 out of 10—on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, which said, "Hannibal Rising reduces the horror icon to a collection of dime-store psychological traits."[5] Metacritic provides a score of 35% based on reviews from 30 critics, which indicates "generally unfavorable" reviews.[6] The film was nominated for, but did not win, two Golden Raspberry awards. They were for Worst Prequel or Sequel (lost to Daddy Day Camp) and Worst Excuse for a Horror Movie (lost to I Know Who Killed Me)." Whenever they try to make a prequel or origin story for a killer they often times ruin it. They did the same with origin for Michael Myers and other killers. Its much better for the origins to be shrouded in mystery, ambiguous and unknown.

Its much better for the origins to be shrouded in mystery, ambiguous and unknown. I guess I don't put as much stock into critics. There are a lot of movies that I enjoy that didn't do so well according to Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes, and I don't like those movies any less. As far as Thomas Harris goes, no, he didn't want to write Hannibal Rising- but he didn't half-ass it either. It wasn't something that he churned out in a couple months- it was still his work, and even if it was forced, it was great. I don't think Hannibal Rising ruined it- I can both appreciate the series with the sequel, or without it. Just an opinion though. Thanks for the tidbit about the producer for Hannibal Rising speaking to Harris about the movie though- I didn't know that
