So, we all know how irritating it can be to search and search and SEARCH AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN for those last few monsters in Omega Ruins, Inside Sin, and of course the Sunken Cave (the elusive Tonberry). Having been working on it this evening, I think I finally got the best set up for every possible battle you may come across.
Assumptions:
You have done a good amount of leveling and can consistently do 99999 damage with at least one character.
You have amassed a solid amount of dark matter from the monster arena rare drops.
You have at least one Return Sphere (easy to obtain).
You can get Flee for a secondary character easily (or use Tidus for this character).
You can get Delay Buster for this secondary character (or Tidus, again).
This is my set up:
All characters have Auto-Phoenix, Auto-Protect, Auto-Haste, Auto-Potion armor (the only one you really need is Haste, but not absolutely necessary if you have high agility).
Tidus: Capture + Break Damage Limit (helps a ton with Tonberry and everything in the Ruins and Sin)
Rikku: Capture + First Strike (also has Flee and Dark Buster).
Kimahri: Capture + whatever, doesn't matter.
The beauty of this set up? Set the cursor to memory, and go to the place you want to grind.
Now, every battle will either be one you want to capture something, or you don't. If there's nothing to capture for this battle, have Rikku use Flee. Now her cursor is set to flee for every following battle. If it's something you do want to capture, defend with Rikku and let Tidus get his turn, smack the enemy over the head for 99999 damage instead of the piddly 9999 that requires several attacks for most later-game creatures. Boom, you've caught it immediately!
I believe this setup has tons of benefits:
Tonberry? Well, he's rare, so you'll be fleeing battles a ton, and even if you're ambushed, Rikku's all set to run away!
Omega Ruins Malboros ambushing you and ruining your run? First Strike with Rikku, use delay buster (it works!), and capture it with Tidus. If you're done with Malboros, then run anyway!
Those annoying Demonoliths, with their Pharaoh's Curse? Tidus will kill them immediately! Yay! Or just run!
Now, I do realize this can't be done immediately, and requires some work. The real reason this worked for me is just because I kept capturing monsters, facing creations, getting gil, improving equipment, etc, in tandem instead of seperately. If you're the kind of person who prefers to capture all the monsters immediately, you probably won't have 60 dark matter just sitting around, and maybe no return spheres either.
Also, it may seem like a waste of dark matter to use on a measly Capture weapon, but I honestly think the pros outweigh the cons. Fleeing even from a one-monster battle is noticeably quicker than defeating it, even with auto-haste on everyone, when you're looking for a very particular monster. Defeating enemies with 10k+ HP with one hit instead of the usual several required by standard capture weapons saves time. The time saved is worth it, for me. But again, this requires that you already had that stuff sitting around. If you are sitting on zero dark matter, then it's probably not worth the time to grind a bunch of them off the sleep sprout's rare drop (1/8, just OHKO with Auron, if you feel like getting them fast without fighting Dark Yojimbo)
Although, I also don't recommend taking a break from monster capturing to type a HUGE post on the UFF forums to explain how much time you're saving using your fancy equipment setup, because it turns out that you just lost a bunch of time by typing it all up...
