So, the whole scary movie thing has been brought up. It looks like we do not have a scary movie thread. I think that we can tackle this by genre. . .
Right off the bat, I am going to throw a few out that are devicive.
V/H/S This movie, especially the first and last segments, really surprised me. I went into it with a "schmeh" attitude and was pleasantly surprised. The first segment in particular was amazing. I paused it right after that one and actually say up in amazement of how well it captured that creepy essence.
The Strangers It's a bit older now but this is another great movie that some people hated. There are a few moments where the tension builds and builds. Excellent use of sound (or lack thereof).
High Tension It's a foreign film and that turns some people off right away. This was a movie with some really tense moments and a neat twist.
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane Watch it. Hate it maybe. But watch it.
We are What we Are Super super slow burn on this one.
I'll save my post for classics for another visit to this. This initial post was to get everyone thinking of some more obscure movies. Obviously much love for Blair Witch and Halloween and the classics, but there is some other stuff out there worth watching.

Banedrom, thanks for starting this thread. I like your list. I've seen V/H/S and I completely agree, that movie surprised me as well. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I've also started to watch We Are What We Are before but for whatever reason I didn't get to finish it. I've never seen the other ones but I'll add them to my list of movies to watch for sure.
Unfortunately, I've seen a lot over the years and can't remember a lot of them...but besides some of the classics that I love, here are a few films that I can think of right now that are more obscure like you said...
Misery - An older film and more of a thriller, but damn it makes you sit on the edge of your seat
Silent Hill - I've never played the video game, but the atmosphere of this movie and its weird characters creeped me out
The Babadook - Pretty unique story. I like the book's words and its involvement in the film
Sinister - Maybe a little more mainstream but the "homemade videos" made it seem more real and the music from this film was creepy as hell
Audition and Tale of Two Sisters - Both had twists that made them pretty memorable
Dead Silence and Puppet Master - Something about dolls or toys moving freaks me out...I watched Childs Play when I was little. Obviously wasn't supposed to, and it scared me so bad because I had a doll in my room right by my bed
Oh...and when I was little I was scared of the Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in The Wall" music video haha...now I find it ironic because I'm going to grad school to get my masters in education to be a high school biology teacher

V/H/S is good but it felt like a less scary version of The Poughkeepsie Tapes now that movie is CREEPY!
I have a lot of good classic recommendations but as far as more recent modern horror flicks go I recommend
Orphan The Collector Insidious Oculus Sinister Paranormal Activity Cabin in the Woods Saw Final Destination It Follows Evil Dead remake Texas Chainsaw massacre remake Found REC 1 and 2 The Descent Jeepers Creepers Trick R Treat Curse of Chucky
Then there are some great asian horror films like
I Saw the Devil Ringu Ju On Audition
Then I have a category for more disturbing extreme modern horror films like
The Girl Next Door A Serbian Film Martyrs Inside
just to name a few

Always nice to see another teacher! I teach fifth grade. Sinister is another one that should have made my list. I remember the music being really armospheric and super creepy. I really liked that one. Silent Hill was also pretty awesome. I also never played the games but I saw that movie in theaters and there were parts of it where I was thinking to myself "holy crap, I'm like losing my mind with all of this screaming dead babies. Anytime someone gets burned alive, it's pretty rough.

That director also made Dog Soldiers which is an interesting take on the werewolf genre. I happened ti to really like Jeepers Creepers. Also saw that in theaters. When he is throwing the bodies into the pipe and he stops and stares, I was totally impressed by the creep factor.

You would enjoy that a whole lot more, at least in my opinion. The movie is alright but after knowing the lore from the game a few things are really irksome, more importantly the case of Pyramid Head. That is a rant for another time completely though. I implore you to watch/play those first three games though. It is completely worth it! --- Horror Movies huh? I really enjoyed the following: The Babadook- The dread while watching this movie was very nice. It had been a while since I saw a legit good horror film and this one was nice and refreshing. Hellraiser- it's just good. A Tale of Two Sister- I also really liked this one. I can't believe my mom rented it for me when I was about twelve! I Saw The Devil- My god, I know someone else mentioned this one but its so good. The Evil Dead (Original and Remake)- I'm a sucker for practical effects and both movies deliver pretty well

It's a really well made horror film with some insane imagery. I've been praising Evil Dead (the original) since I first rented it on VHS from the local video store in the mid 90's. It's in my top five horror films of all time. There are times when there is just this prolonged demonic screaming death that just goes on. The commentary is really good. Actually there are three commentaries. I have the dvd with a Bruce Campbell one AND a Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi one. The blu Ray has all three of them for a newer commentary. All three are good listens. Sam Raimi was criticized for having "crazy shot after crazy shot" and someone was quoted as "I thought I was losing my mind in there." that's definitely how I felt when I first saw it.

I enjoy Jerry Only Misfits too though! Seeing them for the third time in October, they are playing Static Age in it's entirety! Super exciting. Also Also Another Horror movie I forgot to list, Uzumaki based on a Junji Ito Manga. A scary movie about spirals. I recommend it.

I feel like Silent Hill might be one of the only live action videogame inspired movies that was actually good and at least borrowed story elements from the games.
Then there is Resident Evil which the movie was nothing like the games but was still an entertaining zombie movie just not really Resident Evil.

For my favorite horror movie, I'm going to go to the classics.
"A Nightmare on Elm Street". This movie scared me so much as a child, and I still love it to this day. I pretty much watch it every year when Halloween rolls around. The sequels become more camp than scare, but they are okay if you like that sort of thing.
I'm also a big fan of the found footage style of horror film, so feel free to ignore this one if that's not your cup of tea. "As Above/So Below" is a pretty good mixture of scares and just good old dread.

Avatar: The Last Air Bender. The series was so good, but just the thought of the movie causes my sphincter to tighten.
