The following is a statement from Hajime Tabata:
"With the hardware specifications of the newer consoles, it's possible to set it up so you have different enemies and different choices of attacks you can enter in, but I want to simplify that. It'll basically be a one-button action, and the AI intuitively outputs an action that kind of satisfies, gives you that instant gratification, and it connects with the simple touch of a button. I myself am not getting any younger. I don't want to be frantically pushing buttons. I also want to utilize the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves."
I personally like turn-based combat in my FF games, but I'm also open to trying new battle systems. I didn't think I would enjoy the battle systems in games like FFXIII or Crisis Core, but I found that I really had fun playing those games. That being said, ONE BUTTON?! I was hoping the battle system would at least be like in Crisis Core of Lightning Returns where you can map different attacks, magic, or skills to a different button. Having an AI make your decisions for you takes some of the strategy out battles. I'm hoping they still have something up their sleeve, like maybe you have to switch to a different character to use different skills, but at this point it sounds like this is going to be a single-button mashing action game.
I'm still going to get the game and will probably love it, but here's to hoping they don't make it too simple.
