Will there ever be such thing as a Red Mage in a future FF game, or is this an antiquated job class from past FF games? It seems that in recent FF games your white/black mages could learn each other's abilities, but none have been true Red Mages, due to their lack of attack power (although some FF games allow you to level up different attributes like in FFX, there hasnt been a Red Mage in a main line FF game in quite some time). This job class was a staple in early FF games and have slowly faded away.

FF game, not Bravely Default. Its a semi sequel game to Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light DS game and made by the same development team and staff. Bravely Default Flying Fairy. Has FF in the title still and they did it on purpose. Game has thundaga, firaga, blizzaga etc. FF spells, items like elixirs, potions, phoenix downs, same job classes that appeared in FFV. Most FF fans regard it as an FF spinoff game series like the Crystal Chronicle series.

Bravely Default Is more final fantasy then the games coming out now. Yet during development they decided to create a new franchise instead of adding this to the FF series. This proved my point that in addition to throwback storyline and gameplay, even the Red Mage job class is something that Square-Enix has decided doesn't fit the FF mold anymore which is why it was renamed. We could argue whether BD is a FF game, but the fact of the matter is that it was originally going to be a FF game and changed later.

I hope they don't come back! I never found much use for them personally. I'd rather my characters be really good at one thing than sort of good at many things.

Perhaps Final Fantasy was removed so that grognards like me would buy it :-)

The only game that I really used Red Mages was FFV so I could get that elusive Double Cast ability. The idea of a mage/fighter hybrid is a neat idea, but in the end the final fantasy series has always had such epic classes that it is better (usually) to just stick to one specialty and go with it.

I think your best bet for a true Red Mage is going to be the Bravely Default series. It seems to have taken the formula of old FF games and pushed it in a new direction. Bravely Default was almost directly built off of the ideas for FFV.

I don't remember a red Mage in XII, but LR hardly counts since there is no job classes, only costumes. I'm talking about a dedicated job class, in a FF main series game.

Well the costumes sorta count as job classes because each has specific abilities and stat boosts and stuff. The Red Mage outfit offers a balance between magic and physical attacks but it can't user higher tier magic. Similar to Red Mages in other games.
