Magic and abilities play a huge part in any ff or RPG so what are some of yours? Maybe have a top 5.

In no particular order...
1. Life! (in some FF's it intsa kills zombies which is pretty cool)
2. Pray (life saver in X and X-2)
3. Demi (underrated)
4. Anything that allows you turn enemy skills
5. Auto-Life

Gotta have a life haha. I think mine would be Aegis which you can't really use but you should because of its unholy buffing by putting haste, shell, barrier, re-raise, and regen on your dude but it can only be used by an unplayable character in ff tactics. I also love the enemy skill ability but I feel like its only worth it in ff7 thanks to magic breath which is a godly spell. I love the 4x cut materia in ff7 also I love my guys to attack multiple times. Jump is also a sweet power in the ff series avoid damage and slam down with justice! Pretty much every skill the holy knight class has in ff tactics also. A couple of bonus powers I would say the spell blade from ff9 and the remade darkness power in ff4 on the ds were really cool. Oh gil toss was a fun one in ff5 here let me just throw a few bucks for max damage maybe the monster wants money and then you just win it back after haha.

Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:
Quick Attack - Essential ability for FFX Monster Arena fights
Life 3 - I like this one because you can cast it whenever you have a chance, whereas with the Life spell you need to cast it ASAP
Mug - One of the most underrated ways to obtain some pretty powerful equipment and items
Wall/Reflect - For those pesky magic using enemies
Ultima - One of the best spells in all of FF! There is even a podcast named after it!

Those are good ones. I used mug a few times and it never got me anything but it did damage so I used it from time to time.

Life/full-life: gotta have it.
Haste: Always enjoyed speedy fights. Auto
haste in 9 was hella awesome.
Steal/mug: Gotta get them fat loots
Esuna: Gotta have those full status heals.
Ultima: cause
