There are some FF games with certain enemies that can wipe an unprepared party out instantly. These random encounters usually happen at the worst time can set your game back quite a bit if you are one of those overconfident FF veterans who don't feel the need to save unless there is an upcoming boss fight.
For me, that random encounter has always been the Marlboro, and more specifically the one from FF8. The Marlboro from FF8 attacks immediately with bad breath, which inflicts your entire party with virtually every status ailment in the game. All you can do is watch your characters kill themselves in a blind, poisoned, berserked, confusion. While these effects can be mitigated with certain abilities, it is difficult to prevent all of the ailments. I don't know about anyone else, but my butthole puckers every-time the battle screen pops up and there is Marlboro waiting to attack.
Well, what are some of the random encounters you guys dread getting into?

You always have a pretty obscene phrase or metaphor in your posts. But anyway I clicked on this thinking the Malboro as well, except for me it was more so in Omega Ruins in FFX, only because I rarely was wandering around near Esthar to run into one in FFVIII. Ruby dragons in 8 were also a pain for me.

The Marlboro suck that for sure but at least in all games you were given ribbon to counteract them. My pick is Warmech as can run into him in the Flying Fortress on the bridge leading to Tiamat, it has a 3 in 64 chance of appearing. He is considered the first superboss in the series, and unlike other game you don't have to go out of your way to find him he will be in an area you will have to pass through to complete the game. This first time i played FF1 i ran into him, had no clue he would be there nothing i had seen before would have prepared me to fight something like him in that area. He hit me right off the bat with Nuke and killed me white and black mage, and then used nuke again killing my Thief, my warrior held out for another turn but fell as well. Not only is it devastating but it has a regenerate on it at battle start. I imagine that players that didn't know about him and ran into him unprepared would fell like the game just bitch slapped them lol Runner up for me is Marlboro, followed by Behemoths(In most games they use some pretty strong magic when they die)

I almost put the Marlboros from FFX but it really didn't take long for me to be able to get a couple attacks off and kill it before it could use bad breath. In FF8 you almost don't have enough junction slots to protect against all of the ailments which make them difficult.

Not really a random encounter, but I really hate triggering Superboss battles before I'm ready. This happened to me a lot with the Dark Aeons in Final Fantasy X, and I got obliterated every time. And while playing Final Fantasy VII this weekend, I went in the sub to go to the crashed plane for some Source Farming, dived, and pretty much landed right on top of Emerald Weapon. I was able to put up some fight, but was nowhere near ready.
As for true random battles, Great Malboros scare me the most. They start off with "Bad Breath from Hell", and he always ambushes you with it. Unless you have a weapon with First Strike, or all of your characters are immune to pretty much all status effects, he won't even give you a chance.

There is an enemy in FF6 which also isn't really a random encounter but you cannot win. Outside of the imperial palace in vector there are NPCs which when talked to initiate a battle with a "guardian" enemy, which is invincible. I guess later in the game you can fight them again and win, but this is one of those battles that you aren't expecting, especially from talking to an NPC.

Agree completely with Malboro from VIII. I was just playing through Esthar this weekend and got into a fight with it. I got my ass handed to me. Also from VIII, I had trouble with T-Rexaur because of his ridiculous physical attacks. I never really had any problems with VII except exactly what lightsage mentioned about Emerald Weapon. Oh, the Lamia from IX in the grotto. My first time playing, I foolishly allowed it to use Might a little too much and was able to one shot kill all of my guys. I never realized the effects could stack like that. Also the cute little oxen things in a forest that would use pretty intense magic on you. They used comet or something of that extent. Any damn creature that used Recover in XII. Such a cheap ass move.

I read the question and even before you mentioned the Malboro from ff8, I was already thinking it.

...Your Mom! I like to think I'm funny. Ahem. Anyways, of course it has to be the damn Malboro from FFVIII! I can't tell you how many times I was like alright, I'm prepared, lets do this! Maybe I'll get ONE attack in before the Bad Breath starts-aahhhh NOPE! All characters die. Damn it.

Marlboro is # 1 problem then a behemoth in 2nd place. I was thinking about the behemoth's in FF4 in the cave on the moon where you get bahamut, but these aren't random encounters. Still, they are some of the hardest fights in the game, and counterattack every action you take against them.

Marlboro is # 1 problem then a behemoth in 2nd place. Death man, I had Zell with death on his attack and with 100% will instant kill on the second try at most. The damn cat creature was a pain. I levelled in VIII and his cheap ass LV5 Death move would get me a game over.
