I having been going through a period of brief insanity and have thought about replaying FF12 to see if I really dislike it as much as I remember. While I was trying to talk myself into turning it on, I remembered one of the most unusual and downright ridiculous methods to obtain a reward in any FF game. I'm talking about obtaining the strongest weapon in the game, the Zodiac Spear. While most games make you jump through some hoops to get an ultimate weapon (Chocobo Races anyone?) but this was probably the one method that makes absolutely no sense. In order to obtain the Zodiac Spear, you have to NOT OPEN four generic, unremarkable, and indistinguishable chest throughout the game. There are nothing about these chests that signify that they are different than any other chest in the game. The real kicker is that there is no way of knowing which chests to not open unless you are using a guide, as there is nothing in the game that informs you about the consequences of opening these chests. And when you finally skipped opening these four chests (why would anyone NOT open a freaking chest!?), you open another generic, unremarkable, and indistinguishable chest to obtain the Zodiac Spear.
What do you guys think, is this the most unusual method to get a reward in a FF game, or is there something I'm missing?

No worse then 9 with Excalibur 2 or 10 with Chocobo Racing, lightning dodging, etc... In fact while Zodiac Spear method is weird it is way less difficult then either of the 2 methods(just got to know which chest not to open) Why do you dislike 12? I mean other then your dislike of the Zodiac Spear, I mean yeah it isn't the best but i got to appreciate all the new things they tried, all the extra stufff they gave you to do, such a wide world to explore.....I liked it though i admit i haven't finished it myself but that is more due to me burning out on it as i was trying to complete everything and there is a lot to do. Only downside i really saw was the story was weak i never got involved in it like i did for most other FF games which is why i never beat it i imagine, gambits were a fun new idea(though i admit it did kinda dumb down the game once people knew there best setup) Honestly while it has flaws it is decent and just shows Square is still willing to experiment and tweak there games, something that many companies fail to do and games get uber repetitive.

There are several reasons I don't like FF12: 1st-Weak story in my opinion. I had over 100 hours into the game and can't remember a thing about the story. 2nd-I didn't care for the battle system at all. I appreciate them trying something new, but the single-player MMO just didn't feel like it worked. 3rd-The game played itself, all you had to do was walk in a direction and the game did everything for you. 4th-Terrible reward system. I did all the hunts and all I got was a damn "trophy?" Anyway, I could keep going, but I really wanted to demonstrate that I think the method of obtaining the Zodiac spear makes no sense. At least with some of the other methods you mentioned earlier there is some understanding that if you do "X" task there is a reward. There is no such clue to get the zodiac spear.

If you look at it one way, pretty much all the side quests are weird.
A giant chaos beast is about the destroy the world? LET'S CHASE BUTTERFLIES! A psychopath with an Oedipus Complex is about the destroy the world with a chunk of space rock? LET'S RACE CHOCOBOS! An insane Mage is bent on destroying not one, but two worlds? LET'S FORCE A CHOCOBO TO SLAM HIS BEAK INTO THE GROUND A MILLION TIMES!
But, yeah, I always did find the Zodiac Spear thing a little weird considering there is no warning and nothing special about the chests.

yeah they are all pretty unusual, but at least you KNOW there is a side quest, and there are usually rewards from completing them. The zodiac spear has nothing associated with it to indicted a method of obtaining it. I guess I also didn't like how you HAD to use a guide to get it (still do). I like trying to figure things out for myself, and this game didn't allow me to do that.

Would it have been a better if it was mentioned in game that people say that "If you do not open certain chest you may gain the strongest weapon in the game" My basic question is did you dislike the method to unlock this weapon or just that there was no warning? Or a little of both? You have valid reasons for your dislike of 12 and i guess it just comes down to personal preference really. I completely agree the story was weak but i got to feel that while weak, it is no less then 1 or 2 which were still playable.

At least that could be something you could figure out on its own.

FFX probably has that 1st sentence like 8 different ways with all the minigames. Instead of "let's chase butterflies" it could be "let's run around in a thunderstorm" or "let's go all over the world collecting talking plants". But chasing butterflies is definitely the best example

Though as it is not necessary for completing the game i can't say it is a real issue for me, but i can defentlly understand why you dislike it, I just chalk it up to a game puzzle that they expect you to look up online to solve. Kinda think in this day in age it is expected to look up certain stuff for a game or buy a guide(Not saying that is a good thing i just saying is i think that is why the zodiac spear was put in there to reward people who bought there dam expensive guide. Same reason they put in Excalibur2 so people who had bought the guide and went to the online sight would get a prize lol
