For those who have played it, what was your experience playing xi? What did you like? What did you dislike?
For those who haven't: why didn't you play xi?

I absolutely played the s*** out of this game. I was a lvl 75 paladin as my main class with some sort of mid level on every class, with a total 3.5 months actual login time. It's fun if you have an active group of friends playing. The downside was solo play was not fun for me, and at the time the ingame inflation on the auction house was out of control due to Gil sellers. Another downside to the game was the communication. Headsets weren't a thing when I played. I also didn't like how much time was to be invested in just traveling. "Cool you want to level at qufim? I'll be there in a half hour."

I played to a level 47 Samurai. Didn't have a group of friends to play like happybouse (friends would only play WOW). Got sick of just running around and grinding endlessly on ridiculously powerful crabs and eventually after about 6 months said "well that's FF11...time to move on with my life and play something better".
Traveling sucked. Did get lucky on getting a Black Chocobo though. Leveling sucked. Trying to get rare items/monsters sucked (hella farmed by bots) Monster variety sucked. Being broke sucked.
Lots of cons to this game for me. The upside is if you do make good friendships with people online or have a friend you personally know who can play with you. That's what can make the game fun.

I couldn't get over the initial hurdle of how different this game is. By the time I played it I had already gotten invested in a bunch of other MMOs. FFXI does things differently than the genre conventions, but not in a good way. It seemed like it was different, but for no good reason.
I haven't played since this game initially came out in the U.S. in 2004 so most of my memories are fuzzy. When I think of this game all I remember is confusion and frustration with it. I don't have a single good memory of playing FFXI. It's probably better now than it was back then... but I just can't ever justify going back to it. There are better things to do with my time.
