Listening to the FF11 episode made me realize that there is an inevitable expiration date on FF11 and FF14. Eventually the servers for these games will be shutdown and the games will become obsolete. Do you guys think that square will find a way to keep these games alive in another format if they decide to move on, and if so how do you think they will accomplish this?

With other games as a model, the servers will eventually go down and the game will not be playable. In terms of mmos' ffxi has been incredibly successful considering its longevity. It beat Star Wars (Galaxies). It is the nature of the mmo.

Once the official servers go down then a small group of dedicated fans will purchase and run an unofficial server. It always happens for the bigger MMOs that are popular.

Does that mean your average fan will be unable to play these games down the road? In other words, once square discontinues FF11 will future players not have the means to buy and play this game?

What i crave is this, a game that takes ff11 and ff14 and takes the stories and creates regular games from with a more fleshed out main heroes a better story and making them just standard JRPGS this way you offer an alternative to those who want the game experience and the story and the beautiful world without the online elements. If they charged me 50 bucks or even 100 for 11 or 14 as a standard game i would definitely buy it and this way i could play on more my own terms.

Maybe package the games together and tweak the game to where it uses FF12 mechanics. You could even have AI characters to use in your party.

Exactly what i would like as well :-) Just something to give the experience so these games don't simply vanish once the servers are taken down and 11's server for console are gone this year and might only see it online for a few more years on the computer at best i imagine, 14 may last awhile(10-20years even) as it is very popular but eventually it might go the same way.

having these titles as stand alone's would be a tremendous gain to all ff players. i hear from time to time that single companies buy out a server for a game and gain administrative access which allows them to tweak the game in some ways. i wonder what ffxi will become if that happens i would like a much longer and in depth story where all the expansions become a whole part of the game. such a thing is happening in 14 where they are continuing the story of eorzea into the next expansions seamlessly and i cant wait to continue my adventure. should 14 and 11 die at some point i hope i get the time to play it to the stories completion.
