One thing that always bugged the shit out of me about XIII, was the summons. Why, Square, why!?! Why the hell is Shiva a motorcycle? And why, GOD WHY, is my all time favorite Ifrit a fucking dune buggy! Am I wrong here?

They were going with the idea of motorized Eidolons. In previous FF games they did refer to summons as mechanized mechanical beings that aided heroes of light or whatever. For this game they decided to try something new and literally apply that to the summons.
If you notice the first Falcie boss you fight, Then the one that brands your party and the final boss are mechanical godlike beings.
FF has had mechanical strange bosses in the past as well. In Japanese rpgs its also common for certain godlike beings to be portrayed with mechanical features and stuff in other game series.
It didn't really bother me much and I mainly used Bahamut and Odin summons mostly. You don't use any summons a lot in the game since it takes a while to recharge them.

It was kinda weird to see Alexander be a wall. If he was gonna be a vehicle I would have chosen some kind of massive tank. Its also weird how a lot of the wild life in 13 have mechanical features.
