Kingdom Hearts 2.5 was released today, and I was able to pick up my copy after I got off work today. (Game Stop gave me a free upgrade to the Limited Edition for pre-ordering!) Anyway, I was only able to play it for a few hours today, but it's reminded me of a couple of things since I haven't played KH2 for a while. I was just thinking of starting a new game before this one was announced, so I decided to wait...
1. I remembered how enjoyable this game is. I'm having so much fun. 2. The graphics look sweet. I think that KH2 was the last game I was hanging onto my PS2 for, but the remix puts those graphics to shame. It's funny how a great game can make us overlook sub-par graphics. But I had the same thing happen when I played FFVII years after it was released. (I got it before it was available on PSN, so I had to wait until I could afford to lay down $80 for a hard copy of a PS1 game.) 3. Holy cow is the prologue long! I never really rush the prologue, but I played for three hours and turned my game off almost as soon as I could after the the prologue was finished. Maybe Kingdom Hearts 2 can have a record for having the longest prologue? If not, then it's certainly the longest that I've ever played.
Anyway, like I said, I just finished with the prologue, so I still have a ways to go. But I thoroughly enjoyed playing KH2 on the PS2 back in the day, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as much, if not more, on the PS3 now. But I'm really hoping that I can finish it before the Ultima FF Podcast finishes FFIIX and gets to FFIX. I do want to play that game again...
Anyway, anyone else playing KH 2.5 Remix?

I haven't played Kingdom Hearts in such a long time. I remember loving both games when they first came out.
But, I do feel like the story has kind of jumped the shark with all the spin-offs and offshoots. It's too convoluted. At this point I barely remember any of it. Heartless = bad and Keyblade = cool.
If I wanted to jump back into the series would I have to spend some time on wikipedia just to figure out what's going on? Or is KH 2.5 friendly to someone who doesn't remember most of the story?

Well, they did retcon a lot of the information in Kingdom Hearts 1 in 2. I think they were going for "people didn't really understand what the Heartless were in KH1".
Other than that, I'm not really sure. Many of the spin off games take place before KH1 and 2, but I've only ever played the spin offs that were on the re-mixes. I ignored Chain of Memories completely because I don't like the battle system and because Sora's memories of that time are erased at the beginning of KH2. KH2 is set up so you can mostly figure out what happened... at least the important parts.
I watched the cutscenes of 358/2 Days... but I didn't like that too much either. It was more like bad Mary Sue fanfiction than a real part of the series. So I ignore it.
And I haven't gotten to play any of the extra games on the 2.5 disk, and have never played them, so I can't say what they are like. But I feel that I understand the story of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. The others will probably only come into play for Kingdom Hearts 3.

I wonder if they'll try to wipe a lot of the extra lore away from KH3. It's the one thing keeping me from being excited about it. I don't want to have to spend hours on wikipedia figuring out the confusing plotlines of the spin-offs just to be able to get into KH3.

I wouldn't do that anyways. If a games story is so convoluted that you cant decipher it's message, it's kind of a poorly written plot line. As long as you understand the interactions with the characters, you should be able to understand the story. That's how I feel at least.

Id start with 1.5 because if you jump straight into kh2.5 you cant play kh1 again for awhile. I cant wait to play kh2.5 I beat kh2 like 7 times.

I've gotten to the point where I've finished the stories for all the Disney worlds, and I can start my way towards End Game any time I want. But, like most RPGs, I'm taking this time to do some side quests and level up.
I'm kinda addicted to the new puzzle side quest they added to the 2.5 release. I love puzzles in real life, so I'm enjoying hunting down all the pieces and putting them together. You'd have to fully level up all your growth abilities to get them all, but I've done that before in the original KH2, so I don't have a problem doing it again. (Was going to do it anyway because having those abilities leveled up was so awesome.)
I tried to fight one of the old Organization members from Chain of Memories early on, and quickly learned that just because you can fight them doesn't mean you are ready to. I got clobbered, but I was only about Lvl 20 at the time.

Question does Roxas come into play more in the story or is the prologue his only shining moment? No spoilers as well, i never really got that far in 2, think i beat the tron world, but that's as far as i remember.

There are mentions of Roxas through the story, and he becomes more important during the final world.
