The famous... the awful... scene at the end of the Luca section. We all know it. It made us all cringe. But... it was made to be that way.
I don't think that the laughing scene bothers me as much as it did the first couple of times I watched it, and there's one reason for that. It's not a mistake with the voice actors. It is intentionally made to be cringe-worthy. Why? The script was just making a point about how hard it was to pretend to be happy when you are really not. So faking laughter comes out as really horrible. But there are other parts of the game where the same characters have a more natural laugh... and every one of those sound perfectly fine. You can even listen to other characters faking laughter at one point, when Tidus specifically narrates "the only one really laughing then was me." Sure, it's not as bad as Tidus' fake laugh, but it still sounds pretty robotic... especially Lulu.
So cringe all you want when Tidus lets out his big "HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!" because that's exactly what the game wants you to feel at that point.

It's true. There is a meaning behind it.

I remember thinking it was a horrible scene the first time I played through the game.
I just finished FFX for the second time about a month ago and the scene didn't bug me nearly as much. I think it's easier to understand as an adult and most of us played FFX when we were younger. With an adult perspective you can more easily see why he is fake laughing.

That's not even the part about X that bugs me the most though.

That's not even the part about X that bugs me the most though. That begs the question. What is the part that bugs you most?

I think I was too busy bristling about Blitzball to think too hard about it.
On later playthroughs, I just thought 'Tidus, you poor ass,' since he does not know what Yuna and the others are going through yet.

That's some dramatic irony right there.
I felt the same way about Tidus' narration the first time and second time I played. The first time all I could think was "Why is he talking like they're all going to die?" And then you play it a second time after you've beaten the game, and suddenly it all makes sense.

Right. And it's not necessarily about realism, but rather it's usefulness. That's when it starts bothering me.

The belts are a warning to Wakka. "You got to work for this," it says.
