Hey guys. It has been awhile (I've been away on secret W.R.O business). With so many side games and remakes square has for FF, what do you think makes them decide what gets the Final Fantasy title. Exp, chronological trigger or bravely default not being final titles.

It seems to be: "We spent a crap ton of money on this. Better call it Final Fantasy so that we can recoup some of the cash."

I'm not sure, because what happened with Bravely Default is kind of an outlier. They spent a bunch of money and development time on it. It explicitly started as a Final Fantasy game and as they developed the games they slowly moved away from some of the classic Final Fantasy Tropes. It's internal title at Square didn't drop the Final Fantasy name for a long time.
I actually think Bravely Default is one of the best Final Fantasy games they've released in a long time. I wish they had kept the Final Fantasy name on it all the way through release.
At least Bravely Second is coming soon!

Kotaku had an article from Famitsu where they totally answered this exact question: kotaku.com/what-final-fantasy-is-according-to-its-creator-1672622214The main highlight is they're discussing Final Fantasy V, and they Said: "Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy if it has a blue window with text in it." Now granted, they said that in a drunken stupor. Here is the more eloquent answer: Say it's "what is born after those who live intensely, run across a multitude of unbeaten paths to reach the same goal in the end." After all, we've always strived to do new things, and I'd like it if we kept doing that. Looking back, Sakaguchi mused, "With Final Fantasy V, Kitase and I tried to change Final Fantasy and didn't hold back on our ideas. Even if we emptied ourselves, we'd pour out as many ideas as we could the next time around and change everything. Basically, 'so long as the blue window is there, you can do anything you want.'"
