I was wondering in anyone else has ever gotten trapped in an FF game.
See, it's been a long time since I've played FFIX, but I enjoyed it when I did, so since FFIX is coming up in the podcast soon, I decided to get a head start on it. But the problem is that I don't remember that game nearly as well as FFX because I've only played it once years and years ago. So I was still on Disk 1 and I had forgotten that Dagger leaves your party after Lindblum. Once I got her as a healer, I stopped buying so many potions, but then she left the party and I headed off for the next dungeon.
Well... I'm stuck in there. I've got to the save point at the end of the dungeon just before the boss. I'm completely out of potions and phoenix downs. I can't beat the boss without any potions or healing means of any kind, and I can't get back through to the start of the dungeon. I'm trying to steal from monsters and flee, but all I seem to get is a ton of ores. So I'm basically stuck and will have to start the game over again.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I haven't been stuck in a Final Fantasy game before, but I've been stuck in other games before.
Against everything I've ever trained myself to do, I only kept one save file for Tales of Vesperia. I got about 2/3 of the way through the game, to a boss fight.
I saved right before the boss fight, and I was all set to go. There was no going back.
Turns out, I didn't stock up before the fight, and I was heavily underleveled for this fight.
Suffice it to say, 50 hours gone and I had to start over =(
I feel your pain, and it stinks and it makes you not want to play the game again. I've yet to go back to ToV because I just can't put myself through that again.
However, since the very first FF I've played (VIII), I have kept multiple save files for my RPGs, because I'm terrified that my Memory card will break. now without memory cards, I still keep multiple files...
Except for that fated game.

That totally sucks. At least I'm still on the first disk, so I could probably get back to where I was today if I really tried. (Or maybe tomorrow. I've got to level up a bit more on the way...) I should do that to. I never did because I'd never really gotten this trapped before. Before it was always "Do a little leveling around a save point and move on." I got out of a lot of bad areas in FFX like that. But in FFIX, save points don't heal your party, and tents don't heal your party all the way. One time I used two tents to get my party back to full health.
Makes me glad for save points that heal your party.

I've gotten stuck in RPGs before for sure, basically in the same way you describe. I also got stuck in one of the FFTA games, I don't remember if it was the first or the second.
These days I always keep at least 3 save files in an RPG. Save slot 1 and 2 I rotate back and forth for general saving purposes and save slot 3 I only use in an open world area where I know I'm safe and can level up without problem. Generally, if I hit a snag I only have to go back one save on slot 1 or 2 but if I really get screwed I have that save slot 3 as a backup.

I've done that a few times myself. Although, I've found that there are usually enough battle variants to make it out of any situation. But I haven't played all the RPG's, so who knows?!

This has happened to me in two rpgs ffX and Dragon Quest 8. In ff X I got stuck on evrae and I tried so many times to kill that guy and I just couldn't. In Dragon Quest 8 I pwned by the Octopus boss near the beginning of the game he was a prick but some leveling up helped fix that.

I'm happy to report that I managed to get past this part. I restarted my game. But, like I said, it was the first disk so I didn't have to go very far to get back to it. I leveled a bit more, kept a back up save file, and stole and bought my weight in potions, phoenix downs, tents, ect.
Then when I went back, I pretty much curb-stomped the dungeon and the boss. In fact... I've been pretty much curb-stomping my way through the game ever since. The only bosses I've had trouble with were ones that I intentionally drug out so I could steal things from them.

Awesome! Way to stick with it! FFIX is my favorite game in the series, I always like to hear about people playing it. I've found that if you stop and do some good power leveling and preparing once, you often don't have to do it again in a game. It kind of sets you up ahead of the curve and you stay there for the rest of your playthrough.

The only time I ever got stuck in a Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy XII. It was the first time you fight the judge and I was totally under powered. I know that game even pops up and warns you when you're about to go into a hard but, but I foolishly ignored the warnings and went right on ahead and kept the one save file.
Ever since, I always have at least two alternating saves, sometimes more if I'm about to enter a new area and want to make sure I can get out and level up if I have to. The last time I played Final Fantasy VIII, I had three saves per disc!

Yeah. Kaleb Craig got stuck on Ghis for a long time too. He was rough.
