I think FFVI was the first game to have any type of limit break in it, but that is also the earliest one that I've played so I can't be positive. I have a two part question about limit breaks: 1) What game had the best utilization of limit breaks? I'm currently playing through FFIX again, and one of the few things I hate about the game is trance. It almost always fills up right at the end of the battle before I even get a turn, or during a battle (Beatrix) that I can't win anyway. FFVII was fairly balanced in my opinion, even though some of the actual limits were ridiculously overpowered (more on that later). 8's was so abusable made the already broken game way too easy. I was one of the few crazy people that got Lionheart on disc 1- activating it against Seifer at the end of disc 1 was a bit of overkill. 9's is terrible like I said. My vote for most balanced limit break is FFX. You can customize how the gauge fills up, and the only one that is actually cheap is Wakka's attack reels. And you aren't forced into using it as soon as you get it like in FFIX. 12's quickenings were useful initially, but they take way, way too much time to build up a chain, and I was never a fan of them being tied to your mp gauge. 13 didn't have them per se, mostly because those special moves like Army of One weren't really limit breaks.
My 2nd part is the best limit break from each game in your opinion? Here's what I think:
VI-I only remember Terra's being useful but (and I could be wrong) I think they were really rare in this game so I never saw half of them.
VII- Omnislash obviously. Followed by Highwind for me. You guys love Vincent's limit breaks, but I don't like being unable to control him so in endgame I can't agree with that.
VIII- It depends on the playthrough for this one. Alot of people love Quistis' degenerator for removing enemies, and she also has Shockwave Pulsar to break the damage limit but that's still not too useful. Lionheart is amazing but the chances of that activating are like 25% or something. Zell's are abusable if you're fast but those take quite a long time.
IX- This is a hard one for me. Quina and Dagger are out. Amarant might be the best because he can target everybody with his Flair in trance mode. I would say Amarant followed by Freya's jump.
X- Everybody would say attack reels unless they're just awful at blitzball I would think. Blitz Ace is a little more fair and it looks pretty sweet. Pretty much any limit break that isn't Kimahri's or Lulu's can be really good in this game. Yuna's probably would only be up there if you were playing International version where Anima's Oblivion is a multi-hit move.
Some of these really aren't very subjective, but what do you guys think?
