From those that have played both X and X-2:
How much of a disadvantage will I be playing at if I go straight into X-2 with (basically) zero experience of X? In terms of both gameplay and storyline? I only ask because through a series of strange occurrences I ended up owning X-2 but have never owned a copy of X.
All thoughts welcome.
*EDIT- Also, if I do go for X before playing X-2, is it worth paying the extra money for the PS3 X/X-2 HD versions over the original PS2 copy?

Yes. you need to play X before playing X-2 because of the story being an important part of it and X introduces the characters and everything. If you do go for X before X-2 I suggest you get the Vita/PS3 or wait for the PS4 version thats coming out soon of FFX/X-2 HD. It adds new content, better graphics and it adds a new game called Last Mission and has a Audio Story following the events of X-2.

Thanks for the response. If that audio story is only on PS4 version I may well have to hold out untill I can get a PS4 for that. Other than that, I'll have no choice but to go for the HD PS3 versions.

You should definitely play through Final Fantasy X first. It will make X-2 that much more enjoyable..
For real though, I know that X-2 gets a whole lot of shit for being one of the worst Final Fantasy games ever. I didn't think it was that bad. Granted, this is from a single play through when it first came out. I'll have an updated opinion when it is released for the PS4.

My local video game store employee convinced me years ago to play FFX instead of FFX-2. I've always been thankful for that.
I don't consider FFX-2 to be a bad game. It's just horribly pale in comparison to the majesty of FFX.

Its a lot of fun and is similar to the FFV Job System but with a modern battle system.

FFX-2 definitely isn't a stand alone game. That being said, it's with giving a shot. The battle system is pretty fun but the story is pretty weak.

Only play X2 first if you just finished V. Even then though... A lot of the game is "remember this? you liked this before right?" moments.
