Long time listener, first time question asker.
I started out on Final Fantasy VI with friends before graduating to the PS games. When Final Fantasy VIII came out, it was a graphical dream. Character design was getting more and more realistic. Then I saw the first new about Final Fantasy IX in video game magazines and was a bit disappointed. . Steiner with his frighteningly feminine eyes. And what was Quina anyways?
Some see the character design of Final Fantasy IX as a hiccup in the more realistic design since Final Fantasy VIII. Was this a welcome vacation from reality or a disappointment for you guys?

I actually love the character designs in FFIX. I think they stretched themselves as far as they could with the graphics in FFVII and FFVIII while trying to be as realistic as possible. This gave them the knowledge and experience to know the limits of the PS1 hardware. So, when they went to make FFIX they designed their characters around those limitations and decided to go with a stylized version of them instead of realistic.
I think it was Square making the most out of the limits of the hardware at the time.

I will say that it is a vast improvement graphically than VII and VIII. I am just not into the giant-headed humanoid things. Even the monsters all looked.... stunted. It is a great game and I am looking forward to playing it again, I just thought that they were much less relate-able than human looking characters.

I loved the style of FFIX characters. Each FF game is different and it was nice to have a departure from the realistic look. It felt more fantasy like this way.

Hated it! I get that they were trying to make a unique character set but to me it seemed like a step backward after FF8. I guess I like characters I can relate to, and I struggled feeling a connection to a monkey or whatever the F Quina was supposed to be. I mean you race a damn hippo for crying out loud!

The character design for FFIX was one of the reasons I got back into the series. I did not like the Pop-eyes of VII and the lankiness of VIII.

FF6 had some some characters like Mog, Umaro, Gogo and Gao. FF10 had Kimahri FF12 had Fran For the most part starting around FF6-FF7 each game has had 1-2 characters at least that weren't exactly humans.

Final Fantasy IX featured Human characters that looked bizarrely nonhuman. Amarant is a human who looks freakish. He actually looks pretty cool, but freakish. This game was like in-between the previous two games (FF VII and VIII) and some of the DS remakes. Childlike in proportion with oversized heads.

Honestly, the character design itself wasn't too terrible. The only problem was the fact that it seemed weird that a childlike design with a plot that was supposed to seem intense. I think the character design of Squall in Dissidia compared to Kingdom Hearts pisses me off even more. That's a bit off topic. I think the character design worked really well with NPCs though like Beatrix and Blank.
