I know that this is a commonly debated concept from FFIX, but Kuja is a character that really pushes the gender roles. When I first played this game, I thought to myself that was a weird looking female character. Eventually, I was more and more confused as they dialogue indicated that Kuja was in fact a male character. What are your thoughts on Kuja as a "David Bowie as Goblin King - esque" androgynous villain?

I admit that it has been a really long time. I played that game when it first came out. But he left an impression as a villain. That whole game was really weird for me. It has a great feel to it, but very fantasy and just strange due to the direction of the graphics. However, Kuja was really a mystery.

I've played and beaten the game multiple times but can't really remember a whole lot about kujas motives. I do remember grinding for hours because I thought I could beat him in burmecia!

I will never be able to think of Kuja as NOT David Bowie now, hehe.

Kuja's motives are that he thinks himself immortal and superior to all the puny humans that he manipulates into killing each other for his own amusement ...and because Garland told him to. And then he finds out from Garland that he was never meant to last, and has a set life span just like the Black Mages he makes and looks down on, so he freaks out about his own mortality and tries to kill everyone so that he doesn't have to face death alone. I never really had a problem thinking of Kuja as a male, because I knew he was from the start. (I first played FFIX years after its original release.) But I think you guys can relate to this Kuja comic that I love: fc05.deviantart.net/fs11/i/2006/206/a/7/FFIX___Child_Bearing_Hips_by_chensterrain.jpg

I think Kuja's look fits his character perfectly. He's always had an otherworldly presence about him (probably because he does, in fact, come from an other world) in the way that he speaks and dresses and carries himself. And I mean, he's not the first feminine or 'pretty' male villain in the series, The Emperor and Sephiroth come to mind.
I do think Kuja is sort of underrated compared to other villains when it comes to sheer power. I mean the mojo blew up a planet with an Ultima spell.

I really liked Kuja as a villain. Sure, he's crazy and does some pretty terrible stuff. But, when it comes down to it, he's just afraid of death. I think that's a fear that a majority of people can relate with.

I think that's a fear that a majority of people can relate with. I agree! It isn't until he learns about his own mortality that he actually snaps a bit. Before that moment he was always very calm and calculated, even when things weren't looking good for him he was always in control, but after he finds out the truth his actions become far more reckless and impulsive-driven.
