By the end of the game how did you guys feel about Tidus? Many people have said he's a super annoying main character. The infamous "laughing scene" is often pointed out as one of the main culprits, but Tidus has many moments throughout the game where he comes off as annoying.
By the end of the game did you still find him annoying or had you come to understand and relate to him?
For me, when I first played this game upon release I thought he was a solid character that I could relate to. Coming back and playing the game recently as an adult I found him super annoying throughout almost the entire game. I hated listening to him every time he talked. I honestly wish I could turn off the voice acting for Tidus. Non of the other characters bugged me in this game. Just him.

I was going to say that he didn't annoy me that much, but after looking at that picture I don't know what to think...

LOL this question is going to get answered 2 months from now.
Anyway I think Tidus was supposed to represent "You" the main character the average gamer FF fan getting transported to another world. Similar to MGS2...

Tidus kind of annoyed me at the beginning. But as he began to grow and change through the story, I grew to like him a lot. At the beginning, he was kind of whiny and he even said at one point that he hoped Sin would attack Spira again just to give him the chance to go home (kinda low.) But then at the end he's the character who willingly sacrifices himself without any hesitation at all to save the woman he loved. You can tell how much he's grown since the beginning of the game, since the voice actor pulled a really neat trick with him. Just listen to Tidus' opening narration "Listen to my story..." and then compare it to how he sounds in the next scene in Zanarkand. Such a huge difference in the how mature he sounds.
So when I replay the game now for the hundredth time, I'm not so annoyed by him, because I know what he'll become. And he's one of the reasons that FFX is my favorite.

His character development was very subtle in my opinion. I think it's one of the better character developments in Final Fantasy. With that being said, every time I play it, he annoys me. I thought it would get less every replay, but it doesn't. My wife likes him a lot, but I just can't connect with him until mid game. He is one of my least favorite characters because of how annoying he is. He does, however, rank above child characters for me though. FFX had some great character development overall. All the characters seemed to progress really well.

I think that Titus had very poor character development. While I enjoy him as a character, not much changes as far as his personality is concerned from the start to the end of the game. With all of the messed up crap he deals with throughout the game you would think there would be a larger effect on his personality, but for the most part he remains the same narcissistic and optimistic person.

Yeah, I noticed that too. There's a slight shift once he realizes the truth about what Yuna has to do... but that's it.

You're absolutely right about the juxtaposition of his opening lines, to then seeing him in Zanarkand. It works perfectly. And I never found him annoying because I think being optimistic is just part of his personality. In fact, I think it worked out perfectly, and made the end even more powerful, because the ONE person who is optimistic, fun, and borderline flippant throughout the majority of the game, is one who does the most selfless act. And he does it without really telling anybody either. Watching the class clown march to his death for the sake of his friends is a remarkably profound thing to watch.

^ I agree I think Tidus doesn't get the credit he deserves because halfway through the game he starts figuring out what Yuna has to do and what the meaning of the journey is but he doesn't let on that he knows. Instead, he chooses to joke and cheer Yuna up any chance he gets and tries to lighten the mood and ultimately surprises everyone at the end by making a big sacrifice.

The laughing scene is hard to watch and he is a little annoying early as hes a winger, but I agree he turns into a solid character. I bereavement it's suppose to represent the adolescent teenagers, who comes of age and cares about things other than himself
