Who is your favorite summon/esper/GF/aeon/eidolon (did I miss one)? If they have appeared in multiple games, which is your favorite iteration?
I've always really liked Odin, but I thought he was best in FF6 due to the awesome backstory that they had for him during his sidequest. I also like how he transforms into Raiden in a couple of the games, adding a new twist to his abilities.

I think the summon that was most useful to me was Bahamut from FFIV. Once you get him it makes fighting the enemies on the moon a lot easier. But I think my favorite in terms of design is Anima from FFX, such a bizarre mixture of sorrow and bad-assery, not to mention super useful.

Hopefully Anima makes a return in a later game.

This is a really hard question to answer. Visually, the summon animations from Final Fantasy VII and VIII are awesome (the first few times). In terms of usefulness, it's hard to not give the award to Bahamut in IV and V. He just kicks all varieties of monster asses. I also have really fond memories of XII summons. They seemed very unique at the time.
Overall winner in my book is Knight of the Round. When I finally got them and cast that summon, I was so happy. It was good times indeed.

I've always been partial to Shiva. They tend to do cool animations with the ice magic and it shattering.
It's also cool that she's super consistent throughout the series. There are other summons that come and go, but a few are very consistent.

I think the big three that are ever present are the main spell elemental ones. Ifrit, Ramuh, and Shiva seem to be in most games.

Bahamut is my number one with it being a tie between IX and X. I also really liked Alexander whom is very consistent throughout the series with respect to art. Doomtrain was another favorite mostly because he was a cool train and he was very helpful. I also like the summons in XII mostly due to their backstory which was interesting...even though that was not a popular choice on Square's part

Not very useful, but super awesome to look at
