Do you remember when seeing 9999 on a hit was so gratifying. You knew that no matter what, you could inflict max damage.
Then, for me, Final Fantasy X came around. When I first broke the Damage Limit, with Auron I believe, I was so pumped. As I age, I reflect on that concept with mixed feelings.
Is this just an example of "power creep" in which game developers just add zeros to the end of HP of enemies and accordingly to the damage a character can inflict? Was there anything wrong with 9999 and enemies with smaller health bars?

Yeah I'm with you. I mean, Ozma is arguably one of the hardest superbosses in FF history, and he only has something like 55 000 HP. In FFX there isn't a lot of strategy involved to defeat the superbosses aside from grinding out levels until you can inflict max damage. I prefer strategy and bosses that make you think on your feet as opposed to bosses with a colossal amount of HP that you just have to mindlessly whittle down.

I think that when they first allowed characters to break the damage limit in FFX it was added as a way to include further side quests, such as the ultimate weapon and sigil/crest quests. Now I think they do it just for the hell of it like in FF13, where all you had to do was have high stats and stagger an enemy, which you needed to do in most fights anyway. I won't lie though, I like seeing high damage numbers like in FF13, and even though it is just the perception of high HP enemies being harder it is still enjoyable beating them nonetheless. I'm not sure how I would feel if the series took it a step further and added yet another 0 to the stats though...

Hahah yeah it gets a little silly. Some of those rogue-like JRPGs allow you to hit for like 100 million, not even an exaggeration.

FF13 game have you doing millions in damage and its awesome lol. I also like FF3 DS for this reason because the limit is 9999 but thats only the number limit technically a 9999 attack could actually be a 26,000 hit and it just doesn't show it because 9999 is the max but the damage still counts

As I finish up FFV, it is really obvious how the game is challenging without having a ton of HPs. I'm level 44/42 and I'm only in the mid 2000s for HPs. Unless I'm playing this game completely wrong, I don't often do max damage to everything. It's more about discovering a weakness and exploiting it.

Thats normal just know that for the end of the game you shouldn't have any jobs equipped and use the Freelancer and your hp will rise a lot and you will keep certain stat boosts and things you have learned from other jobs and then just add the abilities you want from each job. Its better for the final boss to do it this way.

Oh I've got my party ready for the final dungeon. I have played this game four time, yet never once completed it. I played it on an emulator (gasp) way back in the day. Maybe early 2000s. Then I got the PSX FFV and FFVI 2 pack. I always get burned out and getting all the abilities maxed out.
This time around, I have it on iOS, so I can mindlessly grind out the points while I watch TV or something. I just finished my last mime last night so now my whole party has mimic, gil toss, and drink. They also all have Monk, Summoner, and Thief mastered for the stat boosts as Freelancer. There is also a whole lot of other masters as well. I think they all have knight mastered for cover.
All I know is that I am super pumped to finally beat this game after more than a decade of playing it on a variety of platforms.

Alright, FFV complete. It was excellent. I equipped a party of four Freelancers all with mimic, one with rapid fire, one with drink, one with gil toss, and one with time magic. I completely owned the last dungeon, which was nice because I sank 41 hours into the game mastering abilities. It was a nice payoff.
Back on topic, I feel like the break damage limit was a symbol of maturity in the games. If you look at the early games, the sprites are all children-ish. The damage they do seems minuscule compared to some of the later games. As the sprites began to mature, so did the damage they inflict. Maybe I am looking way too deeply into this.

I did beat Shinryu. That was a funny surprise. "Oh a treasure chest. I bet it's another shuriken. Oh wait, it's a dragon."
I didn't beat Omega. Gave him a few tries, but he must have a lot of HPs.

Oh and there is a Neo Shinryu and Omega MkII as well
