I was speaking with a friend of mine who I helped write a few articles and short stories. He mentioned that the hardest part was the end. We spoke about how the ending had to be in sight through the writing. Not as a concrete end, but an evolving vision of what happens when all is said and done. After an exhaustive chat about stories and endings, I started thinking on a tangent about the end of Final Fantasy. The end of it all. It's a grim topic in a way but I think interesting nonetheless. Can anyone see or speculate the end of the legend? If so, how do you think Square will handle it?

Like you say, thinking about the end of Final Fantasy is a grim prospect. But I guess if I were put in charge of such a project (highly unlikely) I think I would push for a large game that would tie all the different worlds of Final Fantasy together, kind of like Disagea started. But it would still be an RPG and not a fighting game. Big game world, big bosses, and a big story. I would want it to be about the Final Fantasy universe rather than just a single world within that universe. Basically, if the series has to end, I'd want it to go out with a bang.

Bravely Default will be the new series and Final Fantasy will just be an occasional mobile release that draws on nostalgia.

Bravely Default will be the new series and Final Fantasy will just be an occasional mobile release that draws on nostalgia. That's a horribly sad but likely idea. I hope they would end the series instead of just releasing it on mobile and playing towards people's nostalgia...the series definitely deserves more than a fizzle. Which brings me here, a big bang. Thats a large task to try and tie the entire series together. I also wouldn't mind a separate story that pays homage to all the previous titles.

I don't think it will end. The only thing I can see is square enix going under and then selling FF to another company, but even that is a long shot.

I wish I could say the same, but I hold firm onto the thought that everything must end. I don't know if I would like anyone else to make the series. Sometimes that is done well, others it is not.

Personally I find that once a series goes on for more than 20-30+ years its pretty much confirmed to always stay around.
Final Fantasy is the most famous RPG series and Japanese RPG series around and its not going anywhere.

If it HAD to end on one last game, I would hope for a game like FF9 that is full of throw-backs and allusions to all the games before it.

Allusions and throwbacks, I wouldn't want a Dissidia type game to end the series. I really enjoyed IX and I think it would be cool if they did a similar method for a 25 year thing, not just an end game.
