When I did my playthrough of FFX I used the classic sphere grid, because that's what I remembered from my original playthrough on PS2. But, in the HD Remaster of FFX they also give you the option of using the expert sphere grid. It gives you more control over your character advancement but it also makes it easier to screw up.
Which version of the sphere grid did you guys use in your playthrough?
While we're talking about the sphere grid, did you guys like it as an advancement system? How do you think it stacks up to the other Final Fantasy advancement systems?

I used the classic grid too because I just didn't feel like strategizing how to level up my characters. I was familiar with the classic grid and knew exactly how I wanted to approach levelin up my characters so it was a no brainer.
I personally like the sphere grid because it gave you customization options while keeping your party on a leveling progression that went hand in hand with the game. While I do miss the simple level up and gain stat boost systems from past games, I am okay with a little bit of customization. I didn't like FF12s system because it was too open and I always feel like I'm not being efficient with my leveling due to the huge amount of options. Keep it simple!

I used the classic because I'm familiar with it. I know that it's going to give me the abilities I need when I want them. So I'm okay with leaving the expert grid alone.

I've used the classic 3 times and the advanced once.

OMG expert, expert EXPERT! Sorry, got a little carried away. The expert grid still has the same basic path and options and if you follow the yellow brick road play exactly the same. The catch is the expert grid is a lot bigger and has more empty nodes the add to. And because it's bigger it has a much higher potential for end game characters and honestly if you want to fight and kill the dark aeons you'll need to fill it up and even clear +1 and +2 boost and replace with +4 and +300hp. I only played classic once but once I tried expert I couldn't go back.
