I was just curious as to what your opinions are of the MMO FF games (11 and 14), and whether or not you think they should be main series entries or spinoffs. I've played every FF numbered entry game and their sequels, except for the MMO games because I don't feel they belong in the series. These two games seem to me like they should be spinoff entries, since they provide such a different experience from the other games in the main series. In my opinion, a FF game should be an escape, a place I can get lost in another life in another world. As soon as a character controlled by a real person enters that world I am suddenly brought back to reality. While I understand the genres popularity and merits, I would rather shave my nuts with a broken piece of glass than pay $60 for a game, then pay again to play it, only to have someone ruin my gaming experience. Thoughts?
Well I am going to have to agree. Although I will play XI (for the first time) with the group to give it a go, I personally do not consider it a part of the main series games. I remember when I first heard about XI. I was already in college and already playing Everquest. I was kind of bummed that Final Fantasy would delve into this realm of MMOs. I thought that it was more of an experiment. To this day, it is the only mainline that I haven't played at all.
If I hadn't already spent 8 years playing Everquest and Everquest 2, I would strongly consider playing XIV. However, it truly does not "feel" like a Final Fantasy game.
I don't think that the charm of a Final Fantasy type RPG translates well to a MMO. It just feels like they took elements from the series and created a world to host an MMO.
As children, we all live in a world of imagination, of fantasy, and for some of us, that world of make-believe continues into adulthood.
