What time period do you guys prefer your FF games to be set in? The NES and SNES games were mostly set in the past with castle settings and themes (occasional trips to the moon notwithstanding), whereas the PS1 and PS2 era games tried to find a balance between modern and futuristic locales. The PS3 and PS4 games seem to have a focus on more futuristic settings. I personally like the FF games set in the past, as the games seem to be able to focus more on story and character development as opposed to trying to teach the player about the world (I would rather stick my wiener in a meat grinder than read datalogs again)! Well, what do you guys think? Past, present, or future?

I prefer final fantasies and games in general set in either a past or steampunk setting. To me, guns and stuff will never be as exciting as swords and bows. And the whole idea of guns slightly invalidates the need for magic so that combo doesn't make alot of sense anyway. I think my favorite non final fantasy example is The elder scrolls and fallout. I love oblivion and skyrim but fallout made me want to "stick my weiner in a meat grinder" also. I also much prefer dragon age to mass effect in the same way. I think future could be cool but I don't think there has been a final fantasy yet that has truly gone futuristic in the same manner as something like halo, star wars, mass effect, etc.
