I like FFX and I'm glad people that never played it have the chance to play the HD versions now.
First here are the things I really enjoyed about the game.
PROS
Tidus is hilarious, he is probably the 1st main FF character that is supposed to be "you" the FF player thats a fan and also a little bit awkward and funny like the average person. Just like you would he is transported to another world and reacts strangely to everything he sees, similar to how you "the player" would act in the same situation.
Yuna is a great character and some argue might even be the real main character of FFX and Tidus is more like a supporting character. The rest of the cast is great too and each offers a unique personality to the game.
Music is great and even though Uematsu was only like 50% involved with the songs and there were like 2 other guys working with him you can still feel the charm off FF music in this game.
I like the unique locations you visit and it adds a nice "pilgrimage" feel to the game as you keep on travelling through areas to new locations.
I like how the game balances hilarious goofy moments with serious and emotional moments, I think they did a good job.
Summons are cool and Anima is awesome as well as Yojimbo.
the various Seymour fights and Yunalesca fight were the best ones in the game
The romance between Tidus and Yuna is great.
The ending to FFX is up there with the other great ones in the series.
The story was really good.
Nice amount of bonus content and optional stuff.
CONS
FFX in my opinion started the really "linear path" FF trend you can clearly tell that FFXIII is basically FFX 2.0 in that it improved upon the linear elements that FFX introduced. I'm fine with some FF games trying something new and being linear so I'm not one of those haters but I do agree that both share many similarities in that they both have a set linear path all the way to basically the end of the game where it opens up and you can finally explore and backtrack. Most areas are still very linear though with just a straightfoward point A to B setup. They didn't try to mask it like older FFs did like FF7 (Midgar) and FF9 where you had a linear path but an impression that you had a huge area to explore.
I never got over that we couldn't fly the Airship around the world
FFX I think is the first in the series to really be easy and they did this to appeal to a new demographic of PS2 owners and kids that never played FF before. I'm ok with it but I do think the game is a way too handholdy at times. They really try to teach you that Tidus attacks are good for certain enemies, Lulu magic for other enemies, Wakka for aerial enemies, Auron for strong armored enemies etc...
Then each battle is a neat set of 3 monsters of different types and thats how most battles are for the beginning of the game, Attack with Tidus, Wakka and Lulu, repeat for every enemy... Its ok but I like the older FF method where you can still hit and kill other enemies early in the game with other characters and it wouldn't say 0 damage or "miss" Battles drag on a lot early in the game when only 1 person in a party of 3 can attack an aerial enemy.
Equipment and weapons... They really simplified this too the point where it was too simple lol. 1 weapon and 1 piece of equipment. Each character can only use weapons designed for their class which is ok BUT the whole equipment setup I felt could have been improved. I prefer being able to equip helmets, armor, braces etc. like in the older FF games and FFX really changed the formula and even FFXIII slightly improved this and allowed you to equip 2 pieces of equipment and 1 weapon.
Final dungeon and final boss was disappointing
WORST MINIGAMES in a main series FF game PERIOD. I could do the broken Chocobo race and butterfly catching BUT seriously that Lightning Dodging was created by sadists. That isn't fun, that isn't what should be in a game. Who the hell came up wit that and thought "hey this is a great idea!!!"
There are points when a game no longer is a game and this is a perfect example, not fun and no longer enjoyable.
Overall FF gets an 8.5/10 from me.
My ranking goes
FF7
FF5
FF9
FF6
FF10
FF3
FF1
FF4
FF8
