So this post is about one of the aspects of my life that I tell myself I will let go but come back to over and over again....
Anime.
My name is banedrom and I watch anime.
Let me be specific. I watch mid 1990's anime. I grew up enjoying it before hipsters took over the world and all things considered nerdy were all of the sudden popular. I guess I don't know that anime is popular per se, but it seems to be much more accessible than when I was a kid ordering it online via bootleg VHS tapes.
So the point of this thread is for anyone who watches anime to name their top anime and why. Maybe I will be all by my lonesome here, but I have to throw it out there because I just recently watched one of my favorite series in its entirety and I need to talk about it.
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion Reason: This show singlehandedly introduced me to the concept of symbolism and reading between the lines in general.
Holy crap, this show is deep. It presents a vast ocean of interpretation that has taken me literally 20 years to understand. It is a masterpiece of story telling and I highly recommend it. It is more than just giant robots versus giant monsters. The the depth of the interactions between the Evas and the Angels is literally mindblowing when it finally makes sense.
Ok I will stop gushing about this series now. Hopefully someone has seen some Anime worth a mention. Right?

Haha lol what a coincidence. Fun fact I just started binge watching Neon Genesis Evangelion entire series... I started yesterday.
No spoilers since I only watched a few episodes back in the 90s and never really finished it and I forgot plot stuff. I'm watching the platinum perfect collection and I have all the movies and extra eps that I will watch after too.
I'm currently on episode 11.
So far its awesome and I love Gainax.
80s and 90s anime is awesome I think most 70s anime and everything before it is great too but the majority of it still needed to hit its stride which happened in the 80s and 90s and the animation and series were mostly top tier.
I do enjoy anime from the 2000s and currently running stuff as well.

So watch disc 1-4, then watch disc 6, then watch the last episodes on disc 5. I could spend a long time talking about Evangelion. Have you seen the rebuilds? The ones labeled 1.11, 2.22, etc..

I want to like anime, and I think I do, but then I see people who REALLY do, then I think I might be considered a poser. For just about anything, including anime, I associate things with significant people or events in my life. So, the anime I am into was usually introduced to me by a friend or I started watching it during some kind of transitional period.
This believe has been reinforced by the fact that every time I sit down to try to watch an anime just to watch one, I usually can't get into it. Attack on Titan is supposed to be pretty good, but I could not get into it. I just kept thinking that it shared some elements with Macross (and then I went to watch Macross). I did enjoy watching the first half of Sword Art Online by myself, but only because it reminded me of Tad Williams Otherworld. Same with the .Hack movie that was on Netflix (not so much the original series or games).
This podcast got me back into the Ghibli movies, and my daughter has made sure that Kiki is played twice a day in the house (though last month it was Totoro, and unfortunately Ponyo holds no interest for her).
My list is possibly embarrassingly outdated since I have not had the opportunity to sit down with friends to do anything, let alone watch anime.

If it makes you feel any better, banedrom, I hid from all my friends back in high school that I liked Naruto. Technically I stopped watching it when Toonami got taken off the air (still bitter about that), but I read the manga right to the very end. In retrospect I think it was silly to be ashamed of liking anything like that. In reality, I later found out that two of my friends hid the fact that they knew quite a bit about Naruto because they watched it, too. Now if you only like hentai anime, then that might be something that you wouldn't want to share... But otherwise don't sweat it.
I've never seen this Neon show, but since it seems like several of you like anime, I'm curious: have any of you ever watched this older anime called Outlaw Star? I remember watching it back when Toonami and Cartoon Network were good and could never figure out why they cancelled it. I did have to hide it from my parents at the time though because that show was quite a bit more mature than what I was allowed to watch 12 or 13 years ago haha.

I was a teenager by the mid nineties and if that was made post 2000, that would be newer to me. I've not heard of it. I have a lot of people telling me that One-Piece is worth watching. I really only recycle five or so shows. In no particular order... Neon Genesis Evangelion Ranma 1/2 Dragon Ball Slayers Oh my goddess In the nineties, ADV published a whole slew of shorter shows. I got into Gunsmith Cats and Goldenboy, both of which are awesome, even if REALLY different from one another. So as some of you may be able to tell, I haven't watched anything that was created after like 1996....

I have seen neither. I am familiar with both, but I have not watched either of them. I would be more likely to try Inuyasha just because of its relation to Ranma 1/2.

Well Cowboy Bebop gets praised as the greatest anime series to ever be made so you should watch it. Inuyasha is a great series too so check it out. currently on episode 20 of Evangelion

Oh dang. That is when it starts to get good. Or bad. Depending on your opinion. It is a pretty divisive show. Personally, I love the last 10 episodes or so.

I think the show got good around halfway through like around episode 13-14-15 somewhere there. Anyway I finished episode 26. Really good show going to watch the movies now.

The only series that successfully hooked me was Death Note, and I've still only watched the first 2/3 of the show. I've tried getting into several others, per the recommendation of friends. I just can't ever get very far without giving up. Like, Full Metal Alchemist. I was told to watch it, so I watched the first 5-6 episodes and really enjoyed it, but haven't gone back to it since. I have this tendency to enjoy anime, but just can't stick with it.

I'm a relatively casual anime watcher and I don't watch anime for the sake of it being anime. I usually only watch if I hear something about a certain series and then check it out. And yes I am more into the "mainstream" anime that most hardcore fans tend to frown on in my experience.
-DBZ I lover everything about this series, dragon ball, dbz, even dbgt. I am also a fanatic for the games. I also believe dbz might be the single most influential anime ever
-Gundam G I do not like any other gundam series really other than this one. And I think it is because gundam g is considered to be the least gundam in the series and is an outlier. It also has alot of dbz influences lol.
-.Hack sign Not really much action in this one although battles do take place. It is more a mental journey that is a breath of fresh air. I also love to very aspect of the .hack games on ps2
-sword art online Very similar to hack sign but with way more action and a good love story throughout. Have yet to watch sword art online 2
-Attack on Titan -just a great anime. Came out of nowhere but it seems everybody is talking about this one nowadays. Great balance of action and emotion that grabs you to feel empathy for the characters. The Japan only game for the anime looks awesome too if anyone has seen it
-Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood Simply put its a great show. Not my personal favorite but I think it might be the most well rounded anime I've ever watched
-Trigun Good old school anime. My sister introduces me to it and it is her personal favorite
On a side note. WE NEED A LEGIT FF ANIME. I mean ff unlimated is fine and all but I want something that is so good people want a game made that is based on the show

I probably watched 7-8 episodes of it and loved it, but didn't stick with it for whatever reason! I thought it was a blast to watch though, and for the most part enjoyed the love story. My primary issue was that the episodes seemed a little disjointed, with characters falling in and out of the show for 1-2 episodes and seeming super important, but suddenly they're just not there anymore. Actually, I think that's something that's always thrown me off about anime in general, because it seems common. Doesn't bother me too much usually, but with SAO it seemed like a different love story with each episode (at least from the few episodes I watched).
