Speed running is so amazing. I once saw a guy beat Ocarina of Time in about thirteen minutes! It's crazy what you can get a game to do with just a few glitches.

I got to agree there uber fun to watch, wonder what game has the longest top speed-run of any game. My guess it would have to be 13 from what i hear but not sure if others might have better idea. I am jsut glad others do speed run because i know as sure as hell i will never be doing one...maybe the opposite a slow run lol takes me months to even finish the shortest RPG's it seems.

I know that there was a really popular glitch in one of the new Sonic games that allowed you to skip half the game really easily, so that made it popular with speed runners despite the game being crappy. But then the glitch was patched, which caused it to be abandoned pretty much instantly. I never played it, but apparently that glitch was the only bit of fun to be had in the game. As for the fastest... I saw a Mario game beaten in about four minutes. That's pretty much the most amazing time I've seen.

He basically glitched the game to send him straight to the end after the first level. Most of the time was spent just setting up the glitch.

I think a speedrun should be using the game and all things available to you EXCLUDING things that outright were never intended, at that point might as well jut say F it and use a codebreaker or a gamgenie etc... yes people will claim that in game glitches are ment to be used but i don't believe you should use them if your actually trying to acomplish something like a speedrun as that just cheapens the experience and eliminates the challege beating a game in 4-5mins because you essentially skipped to the end.....sad Though i don't disrespect the creative element to it.

You're just choosing to use a different definition of the word "cheat". Speed runners, and myself, define cheating as using outside help in order to change the way the game is played. Under this definition, glitches are perfectly fine to exploit because they are programed into the game. Maybe they were an accident, but they are still in the game and can be performed by anyone. But things like a Game Shark rewrite the game code and not everyone has access to one, making it an unfair advantage to someone who does not have one. Let's take the most famous Final Fantasy glitch as an example: the W-Item glitch from FF7. It's a glitch that can be accessed inside the game without any sort of outside cheating device, and anyone can perform the glitch. So I don't consider it cheating... just another tactic that can be used if you know about it. But if someone stuck FF7 into a Game Shark and used that to get unlimited items... that's cheating.

I feel it is cheap more then anything, using "cheat" might have been too harsh a word. Keeping in mind i have no problem about using in game glitches or anything while playing just to complete the game or have fun, I just feel like a speedrun is way more impressive when people actually do it legitimately but of course that can be chalked up to opinion I define legitimately as not using glitches(anything not intended in the game) or cheat. Lets say i used the glitch in 7 get get 99 Mega Elixers and using 1 each turn till I beat Ruby and Emerald weapon i wouldn't feel like i won legitimately as i had to use something not intended to win it would cheapen that victory to me just as a speedrun feels cheap when these exploits are used. Of course like i said before all my opinion, I appreciate a good speedrun for the most part as long as i can feel it was earned :-)

the only "cheat" i have used was the W-item to quickly get my sources and speed run Ruby & Emerald. 14hr 24min 15sec to the very last place to put the Save Crystal and 100% including all Lvl 4 Limit Breaks at 23hrs 7min 54sec. Attachments:

Thats pretty damn impressive. Out of curiosity how do you W-item the sources? My understanding is that the W-item glitch only works in battle, and sources have to be used from the main menu.

Basically you have to trick the game into thinking you have a "usable" item to duplicate. This is kind of 2 parts. First you have to go to an enemy that will give you sources by morphing them, make sure your first item in your item list be usable i.e. a potion. While you have a character morph, knowing it will finish them, use a character with w-item and select your potion and when you go to select your second choice do the w-item glitch, the game with think you are duplicating a potion but you will see the blank space in your item list be filled with the newly acquired source. and just keep "O and x'ing" til you have 99. The other part to this is when you are trying to do it on a single creature and the battle will end, leaving you very little time to start multiplying even with a Turbo Controller. in Disc versions of FF7 the game will not continue past battle if you open the disc tray and you will be stuck in the battle screen, use this to keep multiplying until you get to 99. Kaleb our awesome host got this trick from me for the playthrough There are numerous videos on Youtube showing the first part, i don't think anybody has recorded using the disc trey opening "technique". www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5-Wilk14xs
