Hey guys. I just had a question for the forums. I am relatively new here so forgive me if I suck at writing and shit. Anyway, I wanted to know what your favorite game in the series is and what your first memories/initial impressions of the game was?
My favorite game is FFVII. I know, how different of me. I remember the first time I saw the game was back in maybe October of 1997. I was at a friend's house and he was playing this game and I remember just sitting down to see what was going on. He was at the point of escaping from the Junon prison with Barrett, Yuffie, and Cait Sith. All I really remember is the point where you get out of the area with Barrett and he stops in front of the plane and points his gun to the sky. I was blown away. The graphics were amazing and I wanted to know exactly what the fuck was going on. My friend told me a little about the game and of course he blew the surprise that Aeris died....asshole. Needless to say, I needed this game. I did not own a PlayStation and my only RPG experience up until this point was Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana.
Flash forward to Christmas of that year and my parents told me I could get whatever I wanted. They were always good to me like that so my Mom took me to Best Buy and I picked up a copy of FFVII, a PlayStation, and the king of all game guides.....the Final Fantasy VII Ultimate Guide by Versus Books. Of course, I could not open until Christmas so there was a slight wait. I was 15 years old at the time and I remember Christmas morning came and I busted down the steps like I was a kid again. I opened my gifts and I just sat there staring at this amazing box art until I was given the green light that I was free to go do whatever I wanted. I retreated in the basement, where all good gaming takes place, and hooked up my new system on my tiny 19" TV and started to play. My best friend came over from next door and he asked what I got and I showed him and needless to say he was not impressed. He was never much of a gamer and still is not to this day. To me though, the game looked gorgeous and I was engrossed in everything it had to offer.
I played the fucking shit out of the game that day. In those days the family tradition was to go to my Aunt's house after dinner. I remember I was plowing through Midgar and when I walked into the world map I was blown away. Totally blown away. There is more to this world than this one town? You would think since I had the guide I would know this but maybe I am an idiot...I had no fucking clue. I went over to Kalm and did that little story and I was hooked. I absolutely NEEDED to know what was going on. I plowed through the Chocobo Rnach and was crossing the plains to the Mythril Mine. I was so excited and then I heard my Dad yelling. "FRAN!! FRAN!!! It is time to go!!". I was like you HAVE to be fucking kidding me. I went to my Aunt's but all I could think about was the game. I needed to know what was going on. I don't remember if I ate or if I spoke to any family. I was obsessed with getting back home. I got home around 11ish and played the game until about 4am.
I finished the game the first time within that week. I do not think I killed the Weapons or got everything but I beat it. The next thing I did? I immediately started a new game. I wanted to see what I missed and really dive into the guide to see what else this game had to offer me. I probably played the game 4 or 5 times in the first year. Since that time I have probably beaten the game 20-30 times. It is a game that really takes me back to being an awkward 15 year old. I know a lot of people think that the game survives on nostalgia and maybe there is some truth to that but I believe that is true for almost any game that someone considers their favorite. The reason is that the game is your favorite is because it speaks to you and it hits you at a certain time in your life when you are just ready for it. I cannot say if I had found that game when I was 18 or 19 if I would feel the same way about it. The fact is we will never know. What I do know is that once a year, typically in the winter, I get the itch to play the game and I start it. I rarely finish it anymore because I am 32 and life just gets in the way.
So what about you guys? Any stories about your favorite game and how your first experience was with it?
