Two of you play through FF9 in multiplayer mode, rules are you have complete control over each of your characters and which characters you play (unless already in use), not allowed to tell each other what to do during battle, strategy can be discussed before hand. Dicuss the experience in an episode or two.
I did this with my brother when I was younger and we both really enjoyed it. Adds a whole new level having to rely on a team mate.

That does sound pretty fun, but a bit unrealistic unless your spouse likes FF or you're quite a bit younger than most of the podcast audience. That would be a really different final fantasy experience for sure. Although at the rate FFIX battles move, it might get extremely annoying. Nice Quina quote!

Actually its fun to do this.
Also back with the older FFs we would take turns as friends for each character so I would be one guy and each friend would be someone else and we would pass the controller on boss fights and only sometimes on random encounters.

I'm starting to hate how everybody on this podcast has always had friends who liked final fantasy haha. Never had a single friend like it or even really heard of it. The one I convinced to try it started with XIII.... So he's not too enthralled by the series

The rest are like.... why don't you play Call of Duty, and why is there a giant chicken tattooed on your arm? The struggle is real.

There's your problem, should have introduced them with 6 or 7 and just warned them that the graphics were top for their time.

I like this idea. But i dont picture them going back to 9 just for a challenge run. Well i mean how long would it take to speed run 9 anyway?

If you know what you're doing, you could probably speed run FFIX in about 9hrs. Wouldn't be a massive undertaking.

FFX HD is a good one to start friends with unless they are ok with older style graphics then you might want to start them with FF4 or FF6 or FF7. The FF7 Steam pc port is coming to PS4 this winter and it has improved visuals so that would be a nice place to start.
Although gamers that only like shooters or sports games might not really like FF...

He happens to be one of my good friends and its actually what got us to start talking. We would talk DBZ and final fantasy way back in 6th grade then we started hanging out outside of school haha. Whenever I bring up FF to new people they sort of see it like this taboo thing or lump it together with Warcraft and are instantly turned off. Their loss though

There's your problem, should have introduced them with 6 or 7 and just warned them that the graphics were top for their time. to somebody who doesn't understand that all final fantasies are unique, he was only willing to get the one that just came out. I showed him a bit of vii but he trashed the graphics too hard. And there's no way he would have gone for six. However I think eventually he played X, but never beat it. That's a crime if anything. He's the type of guy that would turn it off after "the laughing scene". Or at least he used to be. Just terrible.

I've got Joe, Kaleb, Cody, and Jake. Two of which I convinced to play the games, and two of which revitalized my desire to play them.
