Hey all!
Does anyone have any particular memories that stand out as being the worst thing that ever happened to you while playing a Final Fantasy game? Lost data, permanently missed something, roommate nudged your console and ruined the disk, etc?
For me, it happened while I was playing FFIX, many years ago. This was my fourth time playing the game, and I had never beat it before despite always getting to disk 4. This time, I was determined. I had spent hours on every last sidequest one weekend before heading off to beat the game. I started Friday night, played all night and got almost everything. Passed out in front of the system midday Saturday and woke up later that evening. Stayed up all night Saturday again. Kept grinding through, and all I had left to obtain were the last few cards to have 1 of every Tetra Master card. By the afternoon on Sunday, I had one of EVERY card except Twin Moons, and two Sahagin cards. I went and obtained Twin Moons, and when I selected the card I wanted to discard, in my sleep-deprived stupor, I discarded the Airship card instead of the extra Sahagin.
So I went to reload my save, thinking "man, I can't believe I have to get those last few cards again!" Nope. Reloaded my save, and it turned out I hadn't saved since Friday afternoon. I'd never turned off the console, and I lost the entire weekend's work.
I still haven't beat FFIX.

Aww man that is horrible. This why you need sleep when you play ff. You will become addicted to it and completely space out on minor details like SAVING.

I've since overcompensated -- no matter what game I'm playing, when I go to save, I always wind up saving like three times just to solidify the fact into my brain.

Save as often as you can make sure to make multiple saves for safety.

That's a bummer. Just screw the card game and play IX for fun. I think you can play Tetra Master as a stand alone game on some sort of platform. In Four Heroes of Light, I could not beat the bird boss at the top of the tree (sorry, that is all I remember about it). I spent the rest of the day leveling in the tree-dungeon. Got my ass kicked harder. It ends up that the monsters level up with you. Gave the game to my nephew the next day.

Once one of my younger cousins wanted to play my copy of FFX. I told him he could, but had no idea what was going to happen. He started a new game, and promptly saved over my master save file.
As much as I love FFX, it took me months to find the will to play it again after that.

But if they have never played a game before and did it on accident then I could understand.

I got grounded for something, and my dad said "you know what, I'M going to play your game and you have to go to your room." So I was in my room, all stressed and angry because of getting grounded, but then I was suddenly REALLY worried, because he said he was going to start a new game, and he never played the playstation before that. So after a while, I left my room and asked my dad, who had turned off the system by that point, if he saved his game yet. He said yes, and that he accidentally overwrote my save file. I got very, very angry with him, and he just started laughing and said he was just kidding. He told me he didn't even know how to save the game. Don't joke around about this kind of stuff, people. Well, actually, yes. Do joke around about this kind of stuff. In retrospect, it was actually hilarious.

Don't think either of my parents could have ever figured even that much out. And the FFIX story was one terrible story. I had a somewhat similar FFIX horror story that happened not long after I joined this forum actually. Probably posted it somewhere. I was doing a new playthrough using a party I'd never used before. Finally remembered to fight Tantarion and crushed him. Having a great time with the game. Switch to the 4th disc after escaping Terra and it keeps freezing during the second cutscene. Tried digging up the old PS1 to try that and nothing. Turned PS2 settings to run faster and nothing. This was a pristine copy of the game too. Several years ago I bought brand new copies of 8 and 9 on amazon because they weren't pricey, so I have no idea what happened.

Schnitzeltime, that is awful. That is definitely one of the more terrifying things about playing those PS1 3-4 disk games. Each time I get prompted to put in the next disk, I'm just thinking "please, PLEASE work!" Happened to me with Chrono Cross's second disk on my fourth or fifth playthrough. I was still pretty young, but went and bought another copy of the game. Over time, I've lost several of my belonging, and now I have two Chrono Cross disk cases, and TWO disk 2's (one of which works) and NO disk 1's.

When I was back in middle school and was playing ffX for my second playthrough I was on my way to finally completing the sphere grid unlike my first playthrough when I simply just completed the game and did nothing extra other than grabbing the extra aeons. As I was finishing up some grinding and anticipating the last little bit of the sphere grid I was about to complete, I went to save. As I'm saving my mom walks in my room to tell me to eat dinner and in doing so she flicks on 1 of the 2 light switches to turn on the lights in my room. 1 of the switches turns on the lights and the other switch turns off several outlets in my room. She flicked the switch that controlled the power in my room and turned my ps2 off while I was saving...i lost absolutely everything. I remember crying alot at the time when it happened lmao

Wow, a few of you have some very sad FF tales I feel for you guys! Fortunately I do not have any FF horror stories that come to mind. The only kinda crappy thing that's happened (and honestly I don't care because I don't like the game at all) was I went to play my FFX-2 on the PS2 back when it was new/er and something was wrong with the disc itself and how it was made. I'd pop it into my PS2 and I'd get this weird red screen and it'd have an error saying it was unable to read the disc. Meh, oh well! I now have FFX-2 with my HD copy of FFX and I still have no intention of ever playing through it :-p
