I enjoyed FF13 don't hate me everyone lol. I might play along again. And how.. I'm one of those people who like XII and XIII. I also liked *gasp* X-2. There is a real disconnect between the later games and earlier games that I attribute to not a lack of Final Fantasy, but more an attempt at innovation. Think of how much hell they would have gotten for continuing to crank out the turn based games. . .

X-2 was awesome still don't understand why it gets such flack, they did some fun stuff i loved the dress-sphere battle system as well as the nostalgia of seeing how the world of FF10 had changed as well as the people. Hopefully i get a chance to see XIII on twitch sometime, i been playing it a lot and i actually like it, but i am only on chapter 4 as i am actually reading all the data-logs trying to get more into the story which slows me down. Only thing i dislike is Lightning I like the fact she is a strong character but did they really have to make her so unlikable I mean being serious and driven is one thing but being cold and downright hateful is another. Almost like she is the exact opposite of Vanille, and while Vanille air headiness and perky attitude makes her kinda annoying I can justify it as she seems like she is just trying to make the best of the situation. All in all Sazh is my favorite he seems the most balanced and likable then the rest.

Lightning will be better for sure. How did they say it in Fight Club, "it's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." She's still in her 10 hour menstrual cycle as far as you are. And Vanille you'll need to look passed the rainbow mirage she's casting. I like Sazh the character, I just find little use for him in battle.

I like how they try to keep original main series games of X and XIII as a traditional final fantasy game then they take the second game X-2 and XIII-2 and play with the mechanics of the original game and really making it a different game. Also I'm sure with as bad as these games did on sales, I'm sure that SquareEnix still made money with the way they reused so many maps and character models. However I feel like the stories where rushed and not very well planed out..
like XIII-2 story is (in my opinion) a total mess! The game was like "Remember how 13 ended?... well that was a lie, actually Lightning somehow disappeared. oh-and now there is time travel, have fun!"

I really love each game of the trilogy but when you finally get toward the end of Lightning returns, at least to me, I realized what happened in the other two games really didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I think the other two just gave a very in depth background of the characters. The first time playing the first two makes you think you have to save the world.

First post here. Love the podcast and excited to join the community.
I stumbled across this podcast and really appreciated the playthrough plan of each game. It actually prompted me to pick up FF13 and replay and finish it this time around.
Through my playthrough I have been having alot of fun and for a while I was questioning why people disliked it as much as they do. The paradigm system is interesting and when you take the time to experiment with different paradigms it can spice up the playthrough experience. The crystarium is unique and gives you the option to really customize how you want to play, especially to experiment how to accomplish a boss fight or a hunt. The environments each Chapter encompass are beautiful and provide you with options to explore many pre-emptive attacks.
With that said, I realized this is a fun game but not fun for a Final Fantasy. For instance, summons are largely irrelevant. A staple of the series the summon has been reduced to a boss fight and then that is likely the last time you see it. The story is confusing not to mention point A to B and cutscene. And to echo a statement Joe made on one of the podcasts, from a directors point of view the cutscenes, while sometimes breathtaking, are confusing. As action oriented as they are sometimes you have no idea where the characters are in relation to one another or what the hell is actually going on.
13 is a fun game but it misses on so much of what makes a Fighting Fantasy game great. Not to mention that there is not ONE track I enjoy listening to when not playing.

Square back in the early 2000s said something around the lines that the direct sequels to FF games should always be viewed as "non canon, what if this happened?" sidestories. So whenever I play something like 13-2 which retcons a story I remember that its not really canon and just a spinoff sequel so it doesn't ruin the original game for me.

I got the platinum trophy for XIII, in fact it's my only platinum trophy. XIII-2 is almost there, as well as, Lightning Returns. Add me on psn, name is Uzleber. With that said, during Kaleb's play through last night, the moderator and I were over stepping ourselves trying to help Kaleb, we agreed to not help unless asked. So during the play through, definitely no spoilers, and only give advice when a question arrises. I'll only advise on equipment upgrading. I want Kaleb to enjoy his first official full play through of XIII, he did an awesome job last night!
