From everything I've heard this game gets a bad rap because it doesn't stray too far from the original. I have to say that it is for this reason that I had so much fun with the game. As a fan of the original I was hoping they wouldn't "ruin" the FF4 name by screwing it up with a sequel. Just look at FFX! Great game that most people enjoyed, but then you pop in FFX-2 and it feels so different from FFX that it is hard to enjoy it. In FF:AY I get to play through areas I'm mostly familiar with and battle similar enemies with an almost unchanged battle system. And most importantly the story feels like a part of FF4. The last dungeon was awesome too, and I don't want to spoil anything but I will say you end up fighting familiar faces out of their element (you'll know what I mean when you play it).
By the way, I recommend playing this on PSP versus Wii.

Have you played through the FF:AY games yet? If so what did you think?

I didn't really like the after years. sorry. Hate me if you want but I enjoyed other FF sequels more than the after years. The episode format stories are annoying. you revisit the same locations over and over and then again with other characters not too mention they are copied from FF4 locations. Didn't like all the new added characters and it was too much. I didn't like what they did with characters I liked from FF4 in this game. story wasn't as good and it did stuff I didn't like. I felt like the game was a fanmade romhack using FF4 and then changing lots of stuff to make an unofficial sequel. All my opinion of course

I bought a new PSP (for some reason the UMD drive stopped working on the old one) to play this game. I liked the idea of the expanded/complete game, but would rather have had new stuff than copy/paste of the original dungeons. I think if I was playing After Years many years after playing IV, then it would be a fun game that reminded me how much fun IV was. But playing them back-to-back felt unsatisfying. I was hoping for a new game.
I think I would have had more fun playing IV on DS and seeing what changes they made than playing After Years.
