Aside from the Final Fantasy series... other JRPG series I enjoy are Kingdom Hearts Shin Megami Tensei / Persona Xeno series (Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade) Bravely Default Tales series (mostly the older 2D ones) Chrono series Mana series. SaGa series Suikoden series Star Ocean series Breath of Fire series Phantasy Star series Ys series Fire Emblem series Golden Sun series Hyperdimension Neptunia series Paper Mario and Mario RPG series Dark Cloud series and a lot more that I can't remember at the moment lol. I saw the neptunia series as something interesting also I remember swing golden sun on a fire emblem game are they the same game or are the same world just different story. Not sure i might need to look into it a bit more. Also I remember that fire emblem had this off putting realistic feature were if you pawn dies he/she is gone forever and man that was a no go for me. Suikoden was a great series I remember playing a few like 6 and 8. And oh boy did I play a ton of phantasy star online.

Also another of my favorites is the star ocean and atelier series. The current atelier is kinda super girly and not for me but the old ones were fun like 3 if I remember correctly.

Yeah Dark Cloud is great I think I like Dark Cloud 2 the most. Dark Cloud 2 was a great game! I put a lot of hours into that one. I'm really hoping for both of them to get an HD release but I know it will probably never happen.

Play Fire Emblem Awakening it has an option so that permadeath is gone and Hyperdimension Neptunia is great if you have a PS Vita you should play one of the games.

I wanted to like Awakening but it felt too much like a tactics game to me. Nothing wrong with that, but not what I thought I was buying. HyperD Neptunia... is that the one that mocks the diva/idol genre? Is there an anime, too? I either have the game in my Things to Remember Amazon wishlist or the anime in some other list to remind me to watch it later.

I enjoyed the Atelier games I have played so far. Have you played Mana Khemia? I believe the games are connected. The turn system is like FFX's, but with empty places that you can manipulate in the turn order.

I will have to look into that one.

Either way, Both Mana Khemia games can be played as stand alones from each other or whatever series they are connected to.
